Sufjan Steven's Illinois
I've just read that Metacritic and pitchforkmedia have voted Sufjan Steven's latest album, Illinios as the best album of the year. It is also the twelth best album of all time according to metacritic. What are your thoughts on this?

THIS IS THE BEST ALBUM OF THE YEAR, HANDS DOWN. GO BUY IT NOW! EVERY SONG IS COMPLETELY AMAZING. HONESTLY, ONE OF THE BEST INDIE ALBUMS I HAVE EVER HEARD.
okay, now that i'm over that, sufjan has amazing lyrics and unique melodies. he delves into every indie sub-genre invented and does so exceptionally. he incorporates soo many different instruments and just... ahhhhhh. i honestly cannot recommend him enough. go BUY the cd now (because it has ALL of the songs and correct titles). i'm looking forward to his 50 states project but only think he'll complete 15ish. i have faith, though. he has THE most potential as an extremely successful indie artist right now, but i don't think he will ever go mainstream, due to the fact that he's a tiny bit too different for mainstream-ers. AMAZING AMAZING AMAZING. |

I got it a couple of weeks ago and I do think it is a great album and some of the songs on it are brilliant. I love the idea that he's going to make an album for every state in America but he's thirty at the minute so he would need to make an album a year until he's 78 to complete it so it's not very likely unless he spends his whole time in the studio, writing and recording songs. Interestingly the state that Stereogum readers voted for him to do next was California (Link) But I think it wouldn't be that next, maybe New York because he went to a school there and lived there for a while. But it's been that the next two states that he'll do are Oregon and Rhode Island.(Link)

there is no way he'll make one album for every state.
we discussed that he might have to combine some states, because some just frankly suck...ie: wyoming...why the hell do we have wyoming anyways, i believe in him, but yes, he will have to pick up the pace a lot as of illinois...it's brilliant. his best work, hands down. |

Yeah, Illinois was amazing. Aside from all the compliments people have already said in this thread, I'd like to give some credit to the new drummer of the album. Songs like "These are Aliens" really shine with the drumming, along with most songs just sounding better as well.
I'd rather he do normal albums like Seven Swan than state albums, but if they sound as good as Illinois, can't complain. |

Re: Sufjan Steven's Illinois
I love the 50 state idea, but think he'll probably burn out before he gets to my homestate, DE. I just love the idea of having a whole album on the state your from, it's like a 45 minute shout out. But my favorite album of his would definitely have to be Seven Swans, it's a little more bare bones than Illinois and very good study music I find. He's playing in brooklyn tomorrow with the castanets and i didn't rsvp in time to go
That's gonna be an awesome show. |
