MOST INFLUENTIAL BANDS ARE THE LAST FEW DECADES?! I'll tell you the most influential bands of the past few decades- Pavement, The Smashing Pumpkins, Nirvana (unfortunately), The Pixies, and Death Cab.

I'll accept the pixies, and to an extent Nirvana, but you can shove Pavement, Pumpkins and Death Cab right up your arse.

Slint for one cut pavements head off and shit down their neck in influence terms. Melvins stomp allover pumpkins in the same size shoes.

Hey bud, there's no way you can call Slint more influencial to indie rock than pavement, if you wikipedia "indie" there's a line in there taht says "most bands that follow in the steps of pavement" i think that speaks for itself. pavement started indie. death cab is clearly also extremely influencial, daphne loves derby, rookie of the year, desert city soundtrack, and countless other bands incorporate death cab-esque keys, lyircs, and ambient sounds. the pumpkins were huge in the rock scene in the 90s. so many bands will tell you they were influenced by billy corgin and his crew

Excuse me? It says so in Wikipedia so it must be true then eh? Are you a complete moron? http://www.frozennorth.org/C2011481421/E652809545/

I think this speaks clearly for you being unable to form arguments for yourself, or to use your critical faculties effectively.

Furthermore to pish over the torch of the "pavement started indy" theorem, if Pavement only formed in 1989, yet the Network Chart show was featuring an "indy" chart from as early as the mid-80's, I fail to see how your statement is possible?

Pavement were initially refered to as "college rock" in the UK as we had plenty of our indy bands going thank you very much. The Smiths were an Indy band, and considerably bigger and more influential than Pavement to boot. Now they were knocking around from 82 onwards and oh deary me it does look somewhat like your argument is sunk.

Death Cab, although perhaps a forerunner of a scene, are in no way iconic. Mogwai are pretty massively influential, much more so than Death Cab. You would never have had Mogwai without Slint (or the Cure for that matter). Mogwai pre-runs much of the taste for constellation records, sigur ros, explosions in the sky, the whole post metal scene etc etc....

And I don't need to be told that the pumpkins were massive in the 90's. I was there. But selling a lot of records doesn't always mean you are influential. Ratt and Warrant sold millions in the 80's.

i didnt say that pavement started indie i merely said that they were far more influncial to indie rock than fucking slint. and idc if you are in britain, other ppl ik in britain spell it indie, these arent race cars buddy, its music. and also the reason wikipedia is a good resource is because it is made by everyday ppl and represents the opinions as well as facts collected by ppl like you and me.

I am most certainly not going to take spelling lessons from you. I spell it INDY. My local record store has an "indy" section. We have no need to worry about the minutate of the spelling, we don't have "indy cars". We have F1. Leaving Indy or Indie free for music.

i guess i did say that. which was a little hasty, but certainly pavement was one of the biggest factors in the growth of the indie movement.

That is only true on your side of the pond. Pavement where not vastly popular in the UK.

Yeah you're right. I think the culture gap has obscured both our view points towards the other.

Re: Good indie bands?

Pavement were hugely influencial for indie. That's a fact. If you disagree, then you pretty much don't know anything about indie. No Pavement = no hipsters. And with no hipster, the true "indie attitude" (not that I subscribe to it) would be pretty much gone. I'm sure that Pitchfork was born on Slanted & Enchanted.

And yes, My Bloody Valentine are indie. And one hell of a band. More influential than Death Cab for sure.
