There's a trailer here:
http://www.sonyclassics.com/americanhardcore/

The film is based on the book "American Hardcore: A Tribal History". It is to the best part a damn fine attempt at documenting the birth and spread of the hardcore scene in the US. The only real problem I had with it was the authors personal opinion that hardcore ended in 86, which is a very narrow view.

The film is just talking heads of people who were there in bands or doing labels intercut with loads of live footage. I think it'll be an excellent movie and might fill in some of the gaps for the younger kids getting into hardcore now.

If nothing else, the music looks good. I just hope they do a good job of fitting it all in.

This does look good, Sure it's a bit like all the other punk documentaries that say "Without this band there wouldn't be punk" etc, but it looks as if it focus' solely on Punk culture, why there was punk etc... I am very excited to see the interview and performances.

Thats a impressive list and sure brings back some memories. I've seen alot of those bands in the DC area, DRI being one that I made sure to never miss.

I'll definitly have to check this out. Thanks for the info.

I am about 30 miles north, but pretty much spent my younger years in DC / Georgetown clubs. The 9:30 club was a popular hangout of mine. Also met the guys from the Decendents, and had the opportunity to be a opening band for them. I got a kick out of meeting Bill Stevenson who was thier drummer. Anyway, I guess that answers your question and a little more.

Small world, I'm also about 30 minutes north of DC, actually I'm living in Virginia now but... I still consider Maryland my home

I too like 930 Club, not as much as some Baltimore clubs though.

i saw it, the soundtrack was good(no dead kennedy's?) but the movie was only decent, besides having a giant melting pot of interviewies.

Saw it recently too. It was pretty good. I didn;t think it needed the DK's. Everyone knows about the DK's anyway.

you could say the same with minor threat and black flag.

ian mckaye's interview segments were worthless.

Re: American Hardcore: The History of American Punk Rock 1980-1986 Movie

True to a point.

But Minorthreat and Black Flag were very much a part of the hardcore explosion, being younger than the dead kennedys (who were attatched to the punk scene). It was a different sound. Also, although everyone knows about Minorthreat, I feel a lot of the time its just Lip Service paid to Black Flag, a lot of kids know nothing outside TV Party, even more are unaware that anyone other than Rollins ever did vocals.

I've seen this documentary, and really, I think it's awesome. I can't really consider myself being a fan of the DC hardcore scene, but it was really interesting, now that I've seen this movie...
