Patty Smith is playing the last night of CBGB

Quote:
It's officially the bottom of the 9th, and CBGB is down to its last out.

The influential rock club, whose lease ran out in 2005 and whose owner, Hilly Kristal, owed close to $100,000 in back-rent to his landlord, the Bowery Residents' Committee, and received an extension on its lease late last year through Oct. 31, 2006. And Kristal is doing something any good rock show never does -- ending the whole thing early. On Oct. 16, a crew will enter the club and dismantle it piece by piece, with the intention of moving it to Las Vegas and reopening it next spring as was announced this past July.

The final show in the venue will be Oct. 15, with influential rocker Patti Smith taking the stage that helped make her famous. There is no word on any other performers currently.

CBGB had been located in the same space -- 315 Bowery in New York City -- since its 1973 opening, and was partially responsible for launching the punk and new-wave movements of the '70s via showcasing acts like the Ramones, Television, Patti Smith and others. Kristal has owned the venue since its inception

I really dislike Patty Smith, but this is still pretty awesome, I'm upset that I won't ever be able to goto CBGB though

I was sad when CBGB's t-shirts started popping up on hipsters everywhere.

How does Patti Smith make it into the punk section here Paul? And don't give us an answer that your the boss you can do what you want. Well it's sad the club is going down, but well happens to the best of us.

Patti Smith was part of what later became known as 'The New York Punk Scene'. This bunch included the Ramones, Television and Blondie, none of whom are what we think of as real Punk. However, at the time, it was definitely hanging around in the same basket of eggs.

I love the album 'Easter' and bits and pieces from 'Horses', which goes against accepted wisdom, but I say it how I feel, not what others say.
