Punk is by no means dead. If they can have a whole XM station dedicated to it 24/7 that evidence enough.

"Yes that's right, punk is dead,
It's just another cheap product for the consumers head.
Bubblegum rock on plastic transistors,
Schoolboy sedition backed by big time promoters...

...I watch and understand that it don't mean a thing,
The scorpions might attack, but the systems stole the sting".

PUNK IS DEAD.
-Crass

Of Course punk is fucking dead. As a movement it has been completely assimilated by modern culture.

If something looks dangerous, it is much safer to co-opt it and declaw it than to stamp down on it and risk increasing its popularity. These days most children have a "punk" phase. They spike their hair and play with a skateboard. They watch Punk vids on MTV and get indoctrinated into a safe and friendly life of punk as mindless consumerism.

Mainstream Punk is dead. That is completely true, because that is all the sex pistols, ramones were... Mainstream acts to promote something.

The Punk scene is VERY well alive and in it's own way NEVER died, it phased out. Music does that, every decade a new cooler thing comes up

But what is a "true" punk really? Who's more punk? Ian Mackaye or GG Allen? it depends on your perspective.

Who are you to be judging what is punk and what is not....

See that is the question that gets everyone, you can't go around and say "AHh those kids are soo emo, they try to be punk but they just end up being little baby emo kids". Now WHO gives you the right to go around saying that about people because in perspective people can turn it around and say something about you that doesn't make you "punk"

I consider punk to be someone FOR the people. Like shit I help out all my friends as much as i can, financially and any other way I can. I don't own anything fancy pretty much anything I buy for myself is either used or something that is needed (cause come on we all need new underwear!). Im not going on a rant about ME being soo punkrock, haha just using as an example of what I think a punkrocker is. And like I don't just do these things to say "yes im finally punkrock", I have always lived my life like this, I don't need anything fancy to live my life, aslong as I wake up I am happy so why not just help out others in my life.

These kids that use to run around school (they probably still do, its just im out of school now) use to be "punk" and it was funny because there pants costed like $100, and they honestly took a good 40 minutes to get dressed because they were a glamor punk and CARED what others think of them dressed like that. Hell when I woke up in the morning I use to go to school in the fucking shirt I went to bed in, if you dont like it fucking change it for me!

PUNK IS DEAD!

Punk died almost as soon as it arrived thirty years ago. Punk was about a feeling at the time and the Pistols were not a mainstream band that fronted it. The Pistols and the Clash were two bands of different styles but a similar attitude that the movement was based around. The Damned, Siouxsie and the Banshees and all the others from the 100 Club were how punk started. When it became mainstream, it ruined everything that it was about.

However, the attitude and the bands that followed brought a new ethic to music, which still has influence today. You can hear it in the Arctic Monkeys (Buzzcocks), Kasabian (Skids) and a whole host of other bands. The fact that we still have to listen to weedy music doesn't mean that some of the spirit isn't still around. Many of the current 'Punk' bands are using an image, chord structures and shouting but do not have the ethic.

Excellent statement, incredibly true.

Problem. On one hand we have bands from the UK, influenced by the first wave of 70's punk bands, but lacking any message. On the other we have "punk bands" who sound more like a boy bands, and still have no message.

Punk ain't only dead, but its damned corpse is starting to stink the house out.

i'd say there are still some punk bands out there, but we haven't heard of them, because they're out there playing music and making a roit and they won't be famous because they don't care if they're famous or not.
