The Mars Volta

Anyone a fan of them?

I hear they are huge in America, and have quite a substantial following in the UK (though not as huge).

De-loused in the Comatorium was one of my favourite albums of the past few years, listened to it a lot. It's a great album.

Frances the Mute was a bit :? in my opinion. It was a great at points, but abysmal at other times.

I haven't delved into this aspect of prog much. Punk is the reason the first wave of prog ended and that critics tend to blow off progressive music as pretentious, so I really have difficulty in finding motivation to listen to a band that combines both genres.

Mars Volta = Orgasmic
Deloused is by far the better album, though I don't own it, I don't know why.

I do like Frances the Mute though which I do own, but not nearly as much.

Deloused seems much more AtDI influenced which makes sense.

Deloused was absolutley smashing. Frances The Mute is good, and has moments of brilliance in L'Via La Viaquez and Cassandra Gemini, which are tunes, and that's 40 minutes of quality in those 2 songs so I shouldn't complain. Anyone heard 'A Missing Chromosome'?

I dunno, just came across it downloading the discography, it's got 7 tracks, and it culminates in a 15-minute track called 'Frances The Mute', as if they don't like to confuse things.

I've overheard one song from Frances The Mute from my brother, and I really enjoyed it. Don't remember its name or even how it sounds though.

It was most likely "The Widow." They actually played it at the Dream Theater concert I went to before the show started. I liked it.

That's probably it. I remember hearing it again on MP's mixtape.

It suprised me to hear, actually. The rest of the stuff they played was Fates Warning, Porcupine Tree, etc, so hearing that song (I knew it from the radio) caught me off guard.

Haha, even if that was played on the radio over here, all the Muse would have prepared me for that long before it came on.

A Missing Chromosome seems to be a promo release. The first three tracks are from their first EP, Tremulant, the next two are outtakes/bonus tracks, and the last two are b-sides. So... probably not worth getting, although the last track, 'Frances The Mute', once you get past the fuck off annoying clanging noises, is actually really great.
