Progressive alternative rock, or something similar. They've definitely got a unique style. I'm not a huge fan of the vocalist, but that's easy to get over. I love their album "Lietmotif," mostly due to the opening two tracks - Symbol Song and Movement I. I'd actually recommend some of their newer stuff to new fans, however, as it generally sounds more, uh, mainstream-ish - though still unique.
