This is kinda stereotypical to say this band the is best but The Clash is just incredible.
I'd also put Dead Kennedys up there as well as The Ramones.

Of course the easy answer is Sex Pistols I think they're the most quintessential punk band, but musicwise their originality and quality are questionable.
e.g. they started up and persisted playing cover versions of Iggy Pop & the Stooges (no fun) and The Who (substitute) (which btw I fink they're brilliant!, both original and cover versions). They're still top punk icons, it's not about the quality, it's about the social statements, the rebellious self-destructing attitude, the sticky cynical simplicity, ok they didn't create punk, Rotten eventually learned to tune in a bit (as Johnny himself said 'we're not into music we're into destruction') Vicious didn't know how to play bass, they were manufactured by McLaren, etc but still they defined punk and influenciated so many other bands... 'hey if those wankers can do it, why can't we? f**k guitar virtuosos!, f**k stablishment! f**k the rules! we've got something to say...destroy!! now thats punk (imo anyway). |

Come on guys, The Sex Pistols as BEST punk band ever?
There have been tons of other bands that have put a LOT more influence towards the Punk genre then those English, sex shop promotors. Don't get me wrong I Like a few songs from the Pistols, but to say they were good, is going too far. Look at bands like the Dead kennedys, being a political voice that was never heard before. In Canada we have D.O.A. with Joey "the Shithead" leading away with his polical views. Bands like SNFU rocked small venues in the Western parts of Canada, in America you had Bad Religion, Black Flag and the Misfits terroring apart the US. But I am glad no one here said The Ramones because that is another rant in a half! Oh by the way they call me Poly, or my goods friend call me AngryMike (and theres a reason behind that, ha). |

Punk off.
Im still stuck bout this. I asked the question as well tho so that shows how thik i am. The ramones would be an obvious 1st but im liking some of the new Punk generating.. NoFx are great but nwhere near the best of all time.
Also i think rancid and the vandals are worth a mention. Overall its Between The ramones, Dead Kennedys, The clash and (obviously) the Sex Pistols
