Good Shoes Review [written by me!]

Good Shoes, London Metro 29th of March

Morden based four piece Good Shoes end their tour at the Metro in front of 200/300 people at the most, and you can?t help thinking this could be the last time they play in front of such a small crowd. It?s only a matter of time before the NME jumps on Good Shoes and people become aware of their brilliance.

Rumble Strips on London based label Transgressive provide the support, are also tipped for great things in the future. The band plays some of their most known songs, with Motorcycle getting a sing a long and the loudest cheer of their set. This was the first time I?d seen Rumble Strips but I can almost guarantee it won?t be the last. They leave the stage and promptly Good Shoes arrive as the crowd begin to feel the excitement surrounding this band. You can tell from the atmosphere in the Metro that this is going to be a memorable night for, Good Shoes. Opening as they always do with the short but sweet track ?Nazanin?, arms raised and hands clapping you can tell from the very first song that this is no ordinary band.

There?s no messing around with Good Shoes, as they rip into crowd pleaser ?In the City? a song they rarely play. Pushing and jumping from the enthusiastic crowd, along with the entire crowd singing the words is what is to come. Perhaps expected from a more established band, but this little 4 piece from Morden has really done well in getting a loyal fan base. Good Shoes are a quick, edgy band and the next 6 songs fly by in no time at all! ?Photos?, ?Everybody?s Talking? and their first single ?Small Town Girl? being the stand out tracks.

There?s an energy from Good Shoes that is reflected by their fans energy, you can feel that the band really cares about what they are doing. ?Never Meant to Hurt You? sees the most jumping and singing all night, as Rhys Jones sings ?you twist and turn and says life?s a fucking bore!? The crowd sing it back to him, although you get the sense that there?s no boredom from anybody in the room. Latest single ?We Are Not the Same? is one of the best tracks of this year, the bouncy intro and turn taking between guitars makes it a great live song and of course the crowd know all the words. ?I, I think it?s good to disagree, you are always saying we are not the same? as the line in the song goes. This song has the place jumping, Rhys Jones mouth over the microphone and guitar in the hand knows how to get a crowd going. The last song before the encore is what is rumoured to be the next single ?All in my Head? this song while not as strong as ?We Are Not the Same? has fast paced clever lyrics such as ?you play in a band, but you?ve got no talent? a swipe at many of the mediocre bands around today perhaps?

The band leave the stage, however chants of ?MORE!? and ?MORDEN!? bring them back, they play two songs from the EP, but surely there is one song missing? The crowd chant ?MORDEN!? over and over and Rhys with a smile on his face begins to play it. ?Nothing left to inspire me, in Morden? Good Shoes certainly are putting Morden on the map so to speak, although ?a Wilkinson?s and a KFC is this all you need for a culture city?? makes you think that Morden isn?t the greatest of places, however they do have this brilliant band who could just be the biggest band in 2006. A short stage invasion at the end of Morden and the band leave the punters extremely happy!
