They started very unrellentingly loud and horrible. Then in time they brought in a lot of mellow folkisms when Jarboe joined. Fascinating band.

you might find their later work more to you taste. that early stuff is "extreme".

They sound pretty cool from the albums they have heard, but I wanted extremer really, I was expecting something a LOT heavier.

its not "heavy" in the dumb metal head sense. but is "heavy" in the emotional sense in a way that almost nothing else is.

This is true, but what I meant was before I had heard any of their music, people always used to say "Oh Swans are just NOISE, its the noisiest music ever, blah, blah blah". But what I heard wasn't this extreme heavy noise band other people were making them out to be.
