[Political content]Democracy. Overrated. Discuss.
Democracy; "rule by the people", from the Greek demos, "people", and kratos, "rule"
Given that we've been trying to get this right since ancient greece (depending on your opinion, perhaps without success) is it perhaps time to face up to the fact that democracy isn't all it's cracked up to be? |

I'd much rather continue "trying to get it right" than have some idiot with his thumb up his...well, yeah...trying to tell everybody what to do, think, and say all the time. Which is more or less the alternative, unless you think that anarchy will work in a large-scale society. Which it won't.

Re: [Political content]Democracy. Overrated. Discuss.
We aren't getting it right, I think, because humans are just basically selfish and given any chance to be in a position of power they'll use it to push their own agendas and advance their own beliefs.
Politicians are the problem more so than the system. I know there is far much more to it than I am making it seem, but it all comes back to the fact leaders are selfish, thoughtless, vein, ignorant people who use their position to help the upper 1% or 2% The rich using their immense amount of wealth to obtain more of it. Maybe democracy isn't the issue at all, maybe it is capitalism which allows business entities to obtain mass amounts wealth then in turn use that wealth to exploit the government. Maybe it is our fault as citizens, most of us are indifferent to politics in our respective countries. Life has become so complex (usually because of politics) not many people can take time our from life to sit around and think about politics & even if you are lucky enough to sit around and ponder it the whole system is so complicated most people can't understand it all. Then you have to look at from whom you get your political news; mass media. So much of it is bias, sometimes obviously sometimes more subtly, that you wonder if the choices you make based on the facts given to you are even accurate. To some up before I ramble on too much: Democracy is fine, it's just the people who are fucked. ![]() |

But if someone was to try to go forward in that kind of fashion, not even Anarchy per say, it couldn't work on the same rails as the current democratic system. The world would be a completely different place. So questions of scale would change. Countries could cease to be relevant. In fact, given the current global political climate, that seems ever more likely. At the moment, I think people are deliberately disenfranchised from the political process. People wont care about something they can’t be involved in. I think people need to be educated from a young age to understand the importance of taking control of your own lives. Its through increased education that the radical movement in South America is picking up speed. Ultimately. I think the world is "stuck" in its way of thinking. If we could make the same social progress as we have scientific we would be laughing. |

A couple of quotes from Winston Churchill:

I was actually looking for a Churchill quote I thought I'd seen, which went somewhere along the lines of: "Democracy is full of problems, but compared to all the rest, the best we can put up with". Or something like that.

I am a member of the communist party. I'm not into democracy because in my opinion it has grown obsolete just like all forms of government do through time. There's two ways to go, well three actually. Fascism, communism, and world war. We saw the third version happen in both WWII and the Cold War. As long as people are close minded about other forms of leading ourselves we will never progress.
PS. I am not a Stalinist. Do not bring up Soviet Russia to me because that is not the kind of Communism I am pushing for.

All forms of government have their merits, but it only takes a small amount of corruption and self-promotion to ruin what can otherwise be a good idea.
Basically the various types of goverments are always less than successful because they're poorly implimented and fail to adapt. Not that I'm an expert.. I don't get paid to come up with answers to these problems ![]() |
