I'm working on a degree in Computer Games and Design, I try to stay awake on the subject. Most games really don't have worthwhile music, so I totally understand why you'd crank up your own music (I do too with a lot of games), but there are a few really talented composers within the game industry, and they deserve recognition.

Let's mention Jeremy Soule. He did the soundtrack for the recent Oblivion, as well as the old classic Morrowind. Both have the unique properties of being really epic and really ambient at the same time. Great games too.

Re: Video game music

Doom and Halo have great music. But the greatest is Kingdom Hearts. It has all the Disney songs slightly changed and stuff like that. Kicks @ss.

Haha, like. Doom 1?

Now, it's been a while, but I though doom barely had music. I thought it was all demonic sounding bass pads and the occasional midi drums. But I haven't really played Doom 3 much, so that might have a good soundtrack for all I know. The game seemed really boring though.

Don't see what itunes has to do with it. That's like saying what's the point in cd's, you've got radio for that shiz. Some games have good music, that's the point. Why miss out? Since game industries go through the bother of hiring and paying a composer to make a perfect soundtrack for a game, I think it's worth a try before discarding as crap. If it isn't any good, I'll put on something else instead. But like Megaman 2? No music would be better than the original soundtrack for playing that game. And Morrowind was like that. Atleast for the first 30 hours. You could put something else on, but it wouldn't be better than the original soundtrack for that type of game. It was perfect. Hell, even World of Warcraft has a good soundtrack, though you're obviously gonna get sick of it eventually. Doesn't mean those first 10 hours or so weren't worth listening to.

even though both the ps3 and 360 let you burn cds into the hardrive so you dont have to listen to the game music solely. ea never makes an original soundtrack, they just jack the top 20 billboard hits.

I'm saying, when im in the mood to hear footsteps and sword clanging ill listen to morrowind
I was saying pc games i listen to less because i already have plenty of music on there.

Re: Video game music

Haha, yeah. That was really well done. The talkshow style channel (chatterbox? Don't remember) was absolutely hilarious. I remember being really distracted from missions by the great radio stations. Can't get out of the car and kill mafia right now, have to finish this song!

Re: Video game music

Does anyone know if there's some sort of compilation album of classic Nintendo songs? I'd seriously listen to it.

Re: Video game music

I mentioned one earlier in this thread: The Mario And Zelda Big Band Concert has a lot of amazing nintendo songs, and the cd is widely pirated around the net. Since it's impossible to find in any store, I don't see any harm in downloading it.

Also, "Mama Mia! - The Very Best of Mario" is a collection of pretty much every mario related piece of music and sound FX to date. It has a lot of crap, but if you're looking for originals, it's a great source.

There are also a bunch of bands who cover nintendo music and otherwise; Try to get a hold of Guado's The Brink Of Time, a rock/jazz band who cover the entire Chrono Trigger soundtrack. Beautiful. And The 1Ups have released a great record too. More traditional jazz, lots of great covers. Nobuo Uamatsus rock band The Black Mages have some very good Final Fantasy adaptations.

Also, OCRemix has literally hundreds of great remixes of nintendos and all other game systems game music. Check out the megaman 2 remixes or the super metroid remixes especially. : O

And speaking of Megaman, Atomic Fire has everything ever featured in a game for free download!

And if you like Super Mario World, this is the best remix album ever made.

Well, I would. I'd go further than that. I would say it was brilliant, and that its quality has seldomly been surpassed within the genre. Koji Kondo has my deepest respect.

Re: Video game music

Or, the theremin!

Hopefully it will, but it's hard to guess. Super Mario Galaxy appears to have MIDI music still (although it's much higher quality this time around), but alot of people are complaining about it.

Meanwhile, there's a cd arranged by Ryuichi Katsumata named The Hyrule Symphony Soundtrack. I think it's a string quartet, most of the time. The sound quality is amazing though. Most of the songs are from Ocarina of Time. You can download the whole thing free of charge on this page, legal and everything.

Also, a concert called PLAY! is setting up all across the world. They have choirs, bands, and orchestras performing all sorts of video game music (and usually zelda), and should be worth checking out.

Re: Video game music

What was the game about killing giant monsters on X-box 360, shadow of collossus or something? The soundtrack to that is up on a fileshare community I use, is that any good?
