Brother Ali

I recently purchased "the undisputed truth" and was amazed, and immidiatly went out and got everything else he has made. A part of the Mpls Rhymesayers group( atmoshphere, ant, etc). He is a albino, legally blind, 250 pound muslim emcee.

check him out

Re: Brother Ali

Shadows on the sun is really good. I like him as a rapper, but not fond of his Islamic themes in some of his songs. I'm bored of rappers telling me about their personal religious beliefs.

Re: Brother Ali

can you gime me some examples of rappers who use religous themes a lot?
i dont think having a positive message, and good guidelines or rules hurts his songs at all.
Especially with the war in iraq, and the general steroetypes around islamic beleifs it doesnt hurt to have someone like ali doing his thing

Re: Brother Ali

"Victory" and "Self Taught" come to mind, and at the end of one song he is talking to a young boy teaching him how to read the Koran, at least that is what it sounds like.

Heaps of other rappers speak about either NOI (Nation of Islam), 5 per cent nation (basically an off shoot of NOI) or mention the Qu'ran or Allah.

Vinnie Paz does it, Rakim mentions stuff about it, The Wu is heavily based on supreme mathematics and the supreme alphabet (all 5%'er shit).

And when did I assert his religious views hurt his music? Never, I said I don't want to hear about his personal religious views, just a personal preference when it comes to music for me. As I said, I'm just bored with it.

But, if you really like him, get Shadows on the Sun. Good album from start to finish.

Re: Brother Ali

Shadows on the Sun, The Champion ep, and Undisputed Truth are all amazing.
Is he actually blind?
I keep reading he's "legally blind" but what does that mean exactly?

Re: Brother Ali

I think he is and I believe legal blindness is a kind of measurement of blindness, I pulled this from wiki for you:

Quote:
Blindness is frequently used to describe severe visual impairment with residual vision. In order to determine which people may need special assistance because of their visual disabilities, various governmental jurisdictions have formulated more complex definitions referred to as legal blindness.[2] In North America and most of Europe, legal blindness is defined as visual acuity (vision) of 20/200 (6/60) or less in the better eye with best correction possible. This means that a legally blind individual would have to stand 20 feet from an object to see it with the same degree of clarity as a normally sighted person could from 200 feet. In many areas, people with average acuity who nonetheless have a visual field of less than 20 degrees (the norm being 180 degrees) are also classified as being legally blind. Approximately ten percent of those deemed legally blind, by any measure, have no vision. The rest have some vision, from light perception alone to relatively good acuity.
