Well said...I find that writing songs is easier with stronger emotions, but that doesn't necessarily mean I have to be depressed. I know that a lot of songs have come from people who are upset, but a lot also haven't.

Personally, my best songs have come from extreme anger and sadness, but my favourite song I ever wrote I wrote about something that makes me feel absolutely ecstatic and happy. It's like in Star Wars...the dark side is easier, but not stronger.

Well it depends the person really, because different people react differently to certain situations, so if you feel more creative when depressed then you go for it .

Try different moods to see which is the best for you. .

Re: Do you need to be depressed to write?

There's a lot of other things you can write about besides sadness and depression.

Observe the world around, find topics that interest you, see how you react to thoughts in opposition to yours, think about why you think what you think, what you think other people think, write about what you want, write about what you've experienced, write about your heroes, daydream.

And if none of these work, LSD or magic mushrooms are a fine substitute for an imagination :P .

im the comlete opposite, if im happy im really restless, i want to go out and do things and see my mates, i cant concentrait. if im unhappy...well this relates more to art, but wen ive written anythin its been when ive been very depressed...i find it alot easier to sit and work just as a way to release everythin and try to understand and it is an inspiration, and art and songs that come from unhappiness, despiration and destruction seem to mean more to me. but thats just me, theres inspiration in anything and everything
