There's... just no comparrison. Sid Vicious, Jonny Rotten... legends. They may not (or did not, now, I suppose), think of themselves as such, but they are.

Kurt Cobain doesn't have long until everybody has completley forgotten he ever existed.

Kurt Cobain was a brilliant artist and musician, and to say he will be forgotten is unreal.

Re: Sid Vicious or Kurt Cobain

They were both very influential to music, there's no doubting that, but if Sid Vicious were a youth of today, he'd be a chav hanging out on a corner with a hood on. The guy's a knob and always has been, regardless of his 'music'.

At least Kurt Cobain made an effort for the most part, and wrote good songs, though he's most definately not a good guitarist. I know alot of guitarists who are fairly average, meaning they can play on stage and sound decent. I'd be hard pressed to work out who's better between them and Kurt. Check out his live playing if in doubt.. but then, Kurt never claimed to be a great guitarist, and I'd give the man the time of day, but Sid.. well.. it's just a shame none of those snakes, spiders or scorpions nipped him when he was doing that discovery documentary on poisonous animals, which was his attempt at trying to appear like he could connect any of his brain cells.

Re: Sid Vicious or Kurt Cobain

In my opinion, both Kurt Cobain and Sid Vicious created amazing music.
I prefer The Sex Pistols over Nirvana, but Kurt Cobain is a legend that deff. will not be forgotten.

Re: Sid Vicious or Kurt Cobain

seriously....completely different genres/personalities/images...

sid vicious was more of an image, Kurt Cobain was more of a musician.

The whole God Save the Queen thing wasn't all that original...they were full on dada-ists

uhhhh...considering it's been over 10 years since his death and there are still books/DVDs and such coming out about him (recently actually) I'd say you're...wrong.

Re: Sid Vicious or Kurt Cobain

I think Sid's musical influence was nowhere near as important as Kurt's. BUt I guess from a fashion point of you he did a lot more.

But which would you rather have, music or fashion?

Re: Sid Vicious or Kurt Cobain

Kurt.

Neither one was a virtuoso at their instrument, but at least Kurt could play his while Sid's amp wasn't even plugged in during concerts.

Also, why does a list that Rolling Stone made matter so much? Rolling Stone sucks.

Re: Sid Vicious or Kurt Cobain

How much impact on music did the Sex Pistols actually have?

In 1965 The Velvet Underground was formed.
In 1967 The Stooges were formed.
1971 The New York Dolls
1974 The Ramones
1975 The Sex Pistols are formed…..
1976 The Clash, The Cramps, The Damned, Siouxsie and the Banshees
In November of 1976, The Sex Pistols, The Damned and The Clash begin the Anarchy Tour.

1977 The Bad Brains, Black Flag, The Germs, The Misfits
Nevermind the Bullocks was also released in 1977.

All of the above bands had a profound influence on today’s music. They were all formed before The Sex Pistols even released an album (their only album). To say that without the Sex Pistols, there would be no Kurt Cobain is just ridiculous. I don’t hear anything slightly resembling The Sex Pistols in any of the Nirvana albums. I hear more influences like Black Sabbath or Black Flag.

In my opinion, punk rock was coming with or without the Sex Pistols. Sid's only contribution to music was his style and attitude.
