Sid Vicious or Kurt Cobain

I have maintained that Kurt Cobain is not much different than Sid Vicious, and that Sid actualy had a greater impact on the music scene than Cobain.

I also heard that they are going to do a movie about the life of Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love. Once again, Sid and Nancy beat them to it.

Here is a suggested title for the Kurt and Courtney movie:

Smell Like I Blew My Brains Out.

I think that they both contributed to the music scene but in different styles of music. They were ahead of the currant trends in music at the time.

Re: Sid Vicious or Kurt Cobain

I think some of you guys just set your jaws rattling and see what falls out some time.

Sid Vicious couldn't play the fucking bass. He wrote none of the sex pistols music. He was total buffoon. Like thick as too short planks. He was also a murderer.

Kurt Cobain was the song writer in Nirvana. He was the lyricist. He was the front man. He was the drive behind the band. He was a junkie, that much he and Sid did have in common. But he was his own man. Sid was a junkie exploited by others.

But to claim Sid Vicious had any musical impact............ Prfffffft.

Re: Sid Vicious or Kurt Cobain

Out of the two, I'd take Cobain anyday. The Sex Pistols were one of the founding fathers of punk, but overall Sid Vicious was just another man. He wasn't even an original member. Remember a guy named Glen Matlock? Kurt Cobain on the other hand, wrote just about every Nirvana song, and changed music in the space of 5 years.

On Rolling Stone's list of greatest 100 guitarists, he came in at number 12. I don't care who you are, that's pretty good. Then also, Nirvana had four studio albums (counting Incesticide), while the Pistols only had 1. Okay, they had stacks of other albums live or not, but let's face it, none of their albums replaced one which would change the course of music.

For those old enough (I'm not but I still know of it) who remembers early 1992? The King of Pop Michael Jackson's album "Dangerous" was on top of the Billboard Charts, when BAM! Nevermind is on top. Without this, where would modern grunge, or even any kind of rock be? Nirvana set the stage for rock through the 90s, along with Pearl Jam and bands that survived the 80s.

Now, let's take another look at the lineups. Sex Pistols: 4 members, Vicious on bass. Nirvana: 3 members, Cobain singer/guitarist. How many songs did Vicious write? Compared with Cobain's multi-albums?

I think a more appropriate question is who was more ticked off, or displayed more angst? Vicious wins there, just because he was in the Sex Pistols.

When did Sid ever display angst? He had a big stupid grin on his face. He was mashed all the time and quite happy to be so.

Please, spitting on the crowd, playing Anarchy In the UK, throwing hammers into the crowd, playing I'm a Lazy Sod...but think about this. When did Cobain display angst, other than in his childhood? He too was mashed off his face...

Re: Sid Vicious or Kurt Cobain

Angst=a feeling of dread, anxiety, or anguish.

Sid was certainly violent and aggresive, but that's not the same as angst. The guy was as thick as two short planks. Unlike Cobain. I point to song title "I hate myself and want to die" for example. Look through any of their lyrics, if one word could some up Nirvana's contribution to music it was angst.

Funny. I would have said alternative. They knocked off pop from the top, and opened the world in general to alternative rock. I think one word to summarise Nirvana's music would be angst, but not their contribution. Their contribution is alternative. If you like you can change that to grunge. But some don't consider them as all that grungy.

Why would you compare those two? I don't really get it. They both have their places in rock history.

Sid Vicious couldn't play or write a damn note. A cult of personality with neither the cult nor the personality.

Kurt Cobain was an amazing songwriter and very underrated guitar player. And the guy could scream like nobody else.

"I hate myself and i want to die" was sarcastic and was made as a parody of themselves and their music. I'm sorry i can't give any good sources to this, but my friend "Lysol" here on IRT, probably knows. i think he might have said it in an interview or something.

if you're saying they're not grunge you just don't know what the fuck grunge was/is. Grunge is from the beginning barely a sound or genre at all, it was more like a movement. That's why grunge (from the beginning) almost never had similarities in the sound, since the genre was just about the music being crappy and above all it was their hobby to just go to the local clubs in seattle to get wasted and stage dive at whatever grungeband playing at the time. the grunge "sound" was made up after the big success of grunge.

underrated?! you gotta be kidding me. 12 on "best guitarists in the world" in the rolling stone, i'm not gonna say he is overrated either but he's definitely not underrated.
