Vangelis

Here's another one I miss from when I had a decent LP collection, and Best of Vangelis was amongst it. Will have to get it on CD at some point.

Shame the title track from Albedo wasn't on it - the over 30's will easily recognise the tune from one of Johnny Ball's regular shows on making maths fun on kids TV before tea-time (the days when his daughter Zoe was probably learning to want to become a Radio 1 DJ).

Easily the best thing I've heard by Vangelis is the Bladerunner soundtrack. A seriously good album - so haunting it's unreal, and it's as enduring, brilliant and relevant now as the original film.

If you can't get access to the entire album, listen out for any opf the first couple of tracks - Main Titles and Blush Response are sooo moody. And then there's Rachel's Song.

I remember working behind the bar in an indie club - one night, about 9:15, waiting for the doors to open, having a last fag sat around the tables before getting to the bars, the DJ at the club unexpectedly put Rachel's Song on.

I swear there was a mood of group serenity while it played - we all just went silent, listen, deep in thought. Then the track ended, people spoke, and we all went on to our bars. One of those strange experiences you always remember. And it's always a great track.

Anyway, Vangelis and Bladerunner - any takers?

Yes, yes, yes! Bladerunner is one of my favourite movies ever and the soundtrack plays a large, large part in making it so atmospheric. The Chariots of Fire stuff is wicked too.

yep vangelis do a great job on that soundtrack - the kind of stuff that lodges somewhere deep in your cranium without you ever noticing - I really helps tie that film together - the opening sequence with the columns of flame just wouldn't be the same without the music.
