FINALLY someone, besides me, who actually knows the meaning of "indie". I'm sick of people refering to "the strokes" and such as indie. I mean obviously they're not indie then they wouldn't be famous all over the world.

Dunno if anybody has ever heard of them but Cazals (find them on Myspace) are pretty good....they even cover "to cut a long story short" which is decent...

Sonic Youth (classics! yes!)
Joy Division (see above parentheses)
Television (see above parentheses)
Good Shoes (if you haven't listened to them, do it.)
The Futureheads
The Fratellis
Franz Ferdinand
The Arctic Monkeys
The Killers
Broken Social Scene
Silversun Pickups
The Hives
White Stripes

Okay, may not all be "indie" (or current! :X), but you get the jist and at the end of the day they are some good bands. If a band can keep it's flare and be on a big record label too, so be it, all I care about is the music.

I would also like to add The Protomen are a interesting bunch. For those that don't know they are a rock opera band focused on the story of Megaman. Very interesting stuff ... the music isn't bad either.
