Re: NIRVANA and all things related to grunge
Tons of bands is unnoticed. At that time, there were a LOT of different kind of bands in seattle, and only like 10 of them got noticed, so they were far from the only thing that was happening there.
Check the documentary "Hype!", it explains most of what happened in seattle between the mid 80's and the early 90's.

Re: NIRVANA and all things related to grunge
yeah, well a lot of bands WERE recognized, at the time. but only like ten of them was able to hang on. But even a hundred bands would have been little since there were so many great, GREAT bands around that area (seattle) and that era (80's early 90's)
i do think you should watch Hype! probably one of the best music-documentaries ever made.

Re: NIRVANA and all things related to grunge
there were loads of bands that didnt get as much attention as nirvana and it is a realy shame because nirvana got alot of influence from these bands and many nirvana songs are obvious rip offs of lesserknow bands riffs (not knocking nirvana they are the one of my favorite bands).
with out nirvana though none of these bands would have been noticed at all. ________________________________________________ i found a canny few good bands in my mates record collection, these are my favorite ones - -TAD -L7 -MELVINS -BUTTHOLE SURFERS -BIKINI KILL -SCREAMING TREES theres also a few good grunge bands out in the UK that ive seen and would realy advise going to see. 'guru kane' are class, very melvins. ABDCUTION OF MARGARET DOLLAR $HORT BUZZKILLS SUGARCRACK GURU KANE Last edited by spiderrichard : 03-21-2008 at 05:48 PM. |

Re: NIRVANA and all things related to grunge
I used to love 'Seattle Grunge'.. walked the walk and talked the talk hehe, but after Kurt died, Nirvana got blown so far out of proportion that it was pretty offputting.
It's hard to say what other bands from around that time and place were good.. there were alot of good ones that went unnoticed, but being so overshadowed, they just flapped and fluttered until they went under the waves. Because of that, I never really got to hear of any good ones outside the mainstream, unfortunately. |

Re: NIRVANA and all things related to grunge
Personally they're one of my favourite bands...and to be fair, they did give a lot of credit to the bands that influenced them.
I love their Unplugged in NY album. How great is their cover of Plateau WITH the Meat Puppets |

Re: NIRVANA and all things related to grunge
I'm a pretty big grunge fan myself, thanks to Nirvana who is my favorite band, and the other major grunge bands all follow on my list.
Pearl Jam Soundgarden Mud Honey ( although I've heard they were garage punk) Green River Temple Of The dog Mother Love Bone All really good bands .Unfortunately, the pop-grunge bands that followed them ruin the genre. And I admit Nirvana did steal some riffs from their many influences ( specifically, Come As You Are stole it's main riff from Killing Jokes eightes) but I still love them. In Utero, all the way! /end crazy fan rant |

Re: NIRVANA and all things related to grunge
Nirvana got way too much credit in the Seattle grunge scene. I am a HUGE HUGE HUGE grunge fan, and Nirvana is imo the worst of the popular grunge bands.. Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, Mother Love Bone, all are much better bands, and some of my all time favorites.

Re: NIRVANA and all things related to grunge
I was in high school during the grunge era. I've love grunge since it began to seep into the mainstream. I think most of the bands from that era were great and inovative.
One of my favorite various artist albums from that time is the Singles soundtrack. The movie was awful, but the soundtrack was great. It's not entirly made up of Seattle artists, but it gives a nice little overview of some of the artists that emerged from Seattle at that time. |

Re: NIRVANA and all things related to grunge
I grew up with the grunge era, and was pretty much into all the bands, but Alice in chains were the ones for me. Ive yet to hear anyone better Staleys end of the world vocals!

Re: NIRVANA and all things related to grunge
They were amazing. That one song on the "Singles" soundtrack was really good, ( "I thought I Lost You") although I remember seeing the video before I saw it on there. I have one of their tapes.

Re: NIRVANA and all things related to grunge
Screaming Trees.... wow, i haven't heard that band's name in a while. Whatever happened to them? I was also very big into the grunge scene- Nirvana's Smells like Teen Spirit used to be the top music video on MM's top 100 for many years in a row.
How come no one has mentioned Stone Temple Pilots? I realize they were outside the Seattle area, but they were still totally grunge...
