Re: Nick Cave thread

I loved Murder Ballads, it became a very special album to me. I have not heard, however, anything else by Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds. I got Prayers on Fire, but other than "Cry", nothing else does it for me. Grinderman, however, was extremely awesome. "Get It On" is fabulous. What should I get next? Let Love In?

Re: Nick Cave thread

Let Love In is a pretty good album - contains a lot of the fire and pathos of his previous albums, but also carrying a more modern sound that isn't disrespectful of his older work.

Just realised you were talking about the Birthday Party then - Junkyard is possibly their best album, but the Mutiny & Bad Seed EP's were almost certainly their finest moment. Think they're available on one CD these days with a couple of singles on top, such as Release the Bats.

For something between Birthday Party and Nick Cave's more recent stuff, maybe "Your Funeral, My Trial" - used to be a favourite - though "Tender Prey" is what made me and a lot of others first aware of Nick Cave, and Mercy Seat is always great to hear.

I think at this point "Go Tell The Women" is my favorite song on there. Amazing album overall.

I was just about to say how I was listening to Mark Lanegan from Queens of the Stone Age and my guy thought it was Nick Cave...I didn't know who he was but had heard of him so we went to his myspace...fairly similar but I preferred Mark's gravelly Boris Karloff-esque growl.
Anyway, there is a Queens of the Stone Age song on a Desert Sessions album called "The Whores Hustle and the Hustlers Whore" and I had to double check the lyrics because they were similar:
" Speak to me of heroin and speed
Of genocide and suicide, of syphilis and greed
"

Ha. It's really weird to see him reffered to as "Mark Lanegan of QOTSA", are you familiar with his previous band Screaming Trees? He also did a colaboration album recently called "Ballad of the Broken Seas" with Isobell Campbell who used to be in Belle and Sebastian. I never heard it myself but it got very good reviews.

Heh, syphilis and greed from Mutiny in Heaven.

Will have to give Queens of the Stone Age some attention.

Currently listening to "Let Love In", which is a pretty decent album of melodic pain.

Re: Nick Cave thread

My bad - I was thinking of Mercy from Tender Prey:

Quote:
I stood in the water
In the middle month of winter
My camel skin was torture
I was in a state of nature
The wind, sir, it was wicked
I was so alone
Just as I predicted
My followers were gone

And I cried `Mercy'
Have mercy upon me
And I got down on my knees

Thrown into a dungeon
Bread and water was my portion
Faith - my only weapon
To rest the devil's legion
The speak-hole would slide open
A viper's voice would plead
Thick with innuendo
Syphilis and Greed

And she cried `Mercy'
Have mercy upon me
And I told her to get down on her knees

In a garden full of roses
My hands, tied behind me
My cousin was working miracles
I wondered if he'd find me
The moon was turned toward me
Like a platter made of gold
My death, it almost bored me
So often was it told

And I cried `Mercy'
I cried mercy on me
Cryind `Mercy'
Have mercy on me
A great song about John the Baptist, I figure.

Re: Nick Cave thread

Yeah, I got your reference Brian. Just didn't know know QOTSA had covered PJ Harvey! I wouldn't mind hearing their version.

Re: Nick Cave thread

Haven't heard anything from PJ Harvey for a long time - wasn't she on Mute records as well, or am I getting my wires crossed again?

Re: Nick Cave thread

erm.. I think she's on Island, but don't quote me.

Her main connection with Nick Cave was her groin.
