Re: What Metal Are You Listening To?
I am currently tripping on this awesome song by Nevermore called Inside Four Walls, and here are the lyrics for your perusal:
Inside four walls I live my life, doesn't matter what I've done The government's always right They tell us what to be, they tell us what to believe They're wrong, my friend is gone Inside four walls, Inside four walls The day they took away my friend Injustice made it's mark All the political whores only come out after dark If anyone knows the way Build me a bridge so I won't fall astray Inside four walls, inside four walls my friend They took away your freedom And the pigs still preach their lies The system falls apart The pigs still laugh, feeding off our broken lives Can anyone tell me why Some violent criminals do far less time? Inside four walls, inside four walls my friend They took away your freedom And the pigs still preach their lies Inside four walls, inside four walls my friend They took away your freedom And the pigs still preach their lies Inside four walls, inside four walls my friend They took away your freedom But they'll never take your mind |

Voivod? I was once told that they spent the first couple of albums re-telling a European folk tale about the Kurgan - one of the inspirations, apparently, for the Highlander movie. Would you know if Voivod erally did so, or was that just another rumour?

Re: What Metal Are You Listening To?
I find 'Inside four Walls' increasingly boring, to be honest. I think Nevermore has much better stuff! -Matricide, The Sanity Assassin, The Riverdragon Has Come etc...
These days I'm listening to ever more Therion: a metal band that really explores the possibilities of symphonic black metal, albeit with mixed results. I urge people to listen to 'Wine of Aluqah' and their cover of Accept's (we're really going back here) 'Seawinds'. Also listening to the fantastic-if more 70's rock than metal, Cairo and Niacin. Nothing like a bit of fusion to get the blood going in strange directions! Plus Sinergy is getting a surprising amount of rotation- a band of great guitar work, matched with *godawful* vocals! |

Re: What Metal Are You Listening To?
Actually my attitude to listening to music has changed a lot since when I first started playing. For a long time I was hung up on technicality and virtuosity, but I couldnt care less anymore. Dylan has the worst voice around and some of the best songs ever. These days, if a song connects with me emotionally, that is really all I look out for. I mean, the neoclassical guitartists may have pushed speed and technique forward in one very narrow direction, but a guitarist like Kim Thayil, whose solos are more of a spoof on the notion of a olo itself, has certainly been involved in crafting many more memorable songs than a Malmsteen or a MacAlpine.
OK rant over. ![]() |

Re: What Metal Are You Listening To?
Absolutey love them. Went to see them live in London this year when they toured for the new "A Natural Disaster" album. My favorite anathema album changes all the time. I think the one that stays at the top of the list most though is Alternative 4. It is such a beautifully bitter album, yet it is an album about a man fighting to regain hope, it is one of the most emotional albums ever released in my opinion. I pretty much love every single album they have released, right back to their Peaceville days, though I am glad they have begun to sway away from the indie sound they started to adopt on "A Fine Day To Exit". In my opinion that is the weakest album they have ever released, with "Release" and "Temporary Peace" being the two acceptions. I cant even begin to list my favorite Anathema tracks because there are just so many of them, but one of my party tricks is to do a solo cover of Forgotten Hopes/Destiny is Dead on an acoustic guitar.

Been tripping on Exodus - thrash the way it should be: fast, fierce and fun! Also, Entombed's Wolverine Blues - a 'death and roll' album that combines killer rock grooves with death bludgeon.

Re: What Metal Are You Listening To?
Judgement is an amazing album, second only to Alternative 4 in my opinion. My favorite tracks are probably Make it Right, Judgement, Forgotten Hopes/Destiny Is Dead and Anyone, Anywhere. Oh and of course Wings of God which sounds like its come straight off a Floyd LP. In many respects Judgement is perhaps a technically superior album to Alternative 4, but its just slightly less emotional IMHO.
BTW Hypes, do you like any of My Dying Bride's stuff? |
