Re: Indie as a genre - hijacked or valid?

There are two definitions of indie, one relating to the label (independent) and one relating to the sound (i.e. guitars).

obviously a hack. For some reason people forgot that indie means independent. I think the bands and fans are confusing their sound with Alt Pop. Which is now, not Alt at all... just pop.

Re: Indie as a genre - hijacked or valid?

When Indie became the definition of a genre it lost its defenition as indipendent music. Now you don't include an indipendent jazzmusician or hip-hoper under the indie tag. So I believe the question should be what indie sounds like, cause it seems that many have very different views on this. But i would definitely put bands like built to spill, modest mouse and the honorary title into the indie genre allthough they are signed by major record labels

Re: Indie as a genre - hijacked or valid?

i think indie has been like a release or a brake for all the meaningless bands that all people likes, but indie sound has evolved and has been showed to the world as a new sound in tv shows as great soundtracks but the origin of the word is lost to me

interpol is great has great influences and is growing a lot

hopefully indie will not be destroyed like punk was with crapy bands

Re: Indie as a genre - hijacked or valid?

Someone else said that "Indie" now means specifically "Indie Rock"
That person is pretty much right. When I say Indie I mean Indie Rock. I don't think signing to a major label makes a band lose the title of "Indie" and Indie isnt a specific sound either. Its really not even a genre. Whatever "indie" means, Indie Rock is awesome and I'm going to listen to it.

For me Interpol are one of the best Rock Indie bands, or as you wanna say. I think their sound is really close to The Editors, specially because of the singer. Both have Joy Division influences, and them where allways an Indie band. With that I want to say, that I think they are still Indie. If they change to a big Label, It doesn´t depends. It just the sound, not how popular are you,....take a look at Oasis or The Verbe!

Re: Indie as a genre - hijacked or valid?

yes, it is based on the label.
but indie as a whole has a rougher edge to it than commercialized rock etc.
thus the use of it.

plus people just start to use "indie" because they think it's cool and "underground" lol.

[quote=masque7;221558]Just over half of those I'd call post-punk

Right. I was a teen-ager when JAMC, The Cure, The Smiths, The Church, Echo & The Bunnymen, Siouxsie & The Banshees, Bauhaus, Love & Rockets, Joy Division, Devo, Talking Heads, Adam & The Ants, etc. were popular among people like me Used to save my money to go buy a new side on vinyl every week.

We called it post-punk, but by around 1989 we were calling it "alternative music".

The significance of being on an independent label wasn't significant in the 80s. Though a lot of the music I enjoyed was being pressed by independent labels. The one that comes to mind first would be 4AD, with The Cocteau Twins, This Mortal Coil, etc.

If Rough Trade qualifies as an independent label, that's significant, because The Smiths were on them. IMHO one of the most important bands of that decade.
