Re: indie bands and major labels
I wouldnt feel particularly betrayed so long as their music didnt change to suit the masses, under the influence of the major label...
However Interpol recently signed to a real major label(cant remember which)and because of that were bumped up to the mainstage at oxegen. Now all very well, more people saw them play, but most of the crowd were there or Kings of Leon, who were headlining the stage that night. It meant that the majrity of the people there didnt know Interpol or thei music, so the atmosphere left a lot to be desired. This, compared to the year before, before they signed to their current label, when the were on the second stage, and had much more crowd responses and atmosphere as the people were there to see them, not KOL |

Re: indie bands and major labels
Remember when people were saying the same thing about The Cure? That would have been sometime around 1985, when they released "Head On The Door". All of my friends were all disappointed that The Cure had gone "mainstream".
Interpol is still a great band, even if they're on a big label now. |

Re: indie bands and major labels
Major labels arn't an evil thing in many respects, these days, majors are being so chewed up and spat out (with dropping their A&R Departments and what not) that they can actually push a viable deal for an artist to make good cash AND keep their integral qualities. That being said... Indie labels are also getting a lot more funding as backers are moving their investments FROM the major labels, to silent support and financial support for Indie labels... so.... very soon it could be said that a "major" label is just a label that shows themselves as the wolf they are, instead of wearing a bit of sheeps clothing.
After a band has finished the term for their contract, they would have to be pretty damn stubborn and thick to stick with an Indie label just for the sake that it is an "indie" label. The best deal is the best deal, however you look at it. |
