Indie Music Vs. Emo Music
Indie Music Vs. Emo Music
Indie is a shortened term for "Independent Rock" and the term Emo is relatively new, it refers to music that is particularly emotional or musicians that are partial to spontaneous and strongly emotional performances. Some independent bands may indeed have an Emo sound, but this does not make them the same thing. They are both blanket terms that cover not only musical genres but lifestyle choices as well. While the Indie and Emo scenes may cross over, they are not mutually exclusive. The general public tends to lump them together which enrages Indie enthusiasts.

Re: Indie Music Vs. Emo Music
Both terms are utter wank, but I guess they are usefull in as much as they give you an idea of what to expect from a band or music fan.
Seriously though, how many musicians have you heard that don't instill emotion into their music? Yeah, some people are just going through the motions, but since Dylan, Elvis and The Beatles, the majority of bands and solo artists use music to empart wisdom and feelings drawn from their own lives, and as such the music is emotionally charged. Of course you have to pretty much rue out all pop performers, but those who write their own music could all go under the wide banner that is 'emo' from its plainist definitions.

Re: Indie Music Vs. Emo Music
But emo stands for 'emotional hardcore' not just any emotional music - which I agree - would basically be all music.
I'll listen to both but I do like bands usually classed as 'emo' better - more punk rock-based which I generally prefer |

"I always think of indie as bands from Manchester who play lots of jangly guitars " - so as this is 2 people agreed on the definition, this is probably the most agreement yet on the topic! |

Father of Emo music is Indie .. I don't remember where I've read it.. I prefere Indie.. maybe I didn't understand the question, but I suppose that Indie & Emo are very different.. it's like smb ask you :"do you prefere tea or coffee?"

Re: Indie Music Vs. Emo Music
Fans of hardcore music would wonder exactly where that element is in 95% of emo music.
That's the trouble with such widespread terms, once it gets out there it takes on a whole new life of its own, or more correctly, journalists just lump any old crap under the same banner, then the 'any old crap' becomes what the term defines.

Re: Indie Music Vs. Emo Music
People have said this a lot on this page, The Morning Light isn't indie at all. Just because they slightly have the physical aesthetics to look the part, don't let it fool you...

Re: Indie Music Vs. Emo Music
The term Emo isn't really new. The two actually had more in common in the early 90's I'd say. Now they've evolved into very different genres. I'm a fan of what most label Indie and I've taken pretty much nothing from my time dabbling with modern emo. I don't mind Sunny Day Real Estate and the like from prior to the surge in emo's popularity. lol when the first rule of emo was don't talk about emo. But if this is like, a choice thing then I'm Indie all the way!
