Ohhh yes they are, I agree. Any song that touches a Mac commercial turns, welp, commercial.
Vampire Weekend got so much buzz this year. I downloaded their album and liked a few songs, but didn't think they were amazing. I just find their sound appealing to a lot of different branches of alternative/indie music. Like the Beatles of indie, everyone likes them.

1) Animal Collective
2) of Montreal
3) The Fiery Furnaces
4) Deerhoof
5) Panda Bear

How are you defining non-mainstream in this thread?

Re: Your Top 5 "non-mainstream" bands this year

There are too many bands that suck these days :/ that is my problem, I go out and spend $20 bucks, only to get home with the confirmed realization that most non-mainstream bands are pretty crap.

I mean, with the internet, all these social networks flying about, if you are 1/2 decent, your audience finds you pretty quickly.

so... with that rant done, I feel an answer would only deem my post as invalid.

Re: Your Top 5 "non-mainstream" bands this year

Are there any good websites to check out for this stuff as well?

I havent heard any really good indie stuff for a long time now. The new Bloc Party CD is pretty good, but everything on my mind is very mainstream. For a while there was a lot of really good stuff coming out. ended around the last babyshambles album.
