OASIS: most overrated band ever?
I'm afraid the Gallaghers are about to return and haunt us for a while.
What do you guys think of Oasis? I'm a firm believer they're all fur and no knickers. Take a look at this article on Birmingham's own Hagley Road to Ladywood: "Nothing better came to epitomise the posture of "hip stupidity" than the phenomenal rise to stardom of pop group Oasis. In his book Everything, pop critic Simon Price described the Manchester band as "amusingly stereotypical oiks or belligerent beer boys, "anti-education, anti-intelligence […] pro-getting wasted. Oasis was a worst case scenario, lowest-common-denominator cliché of what the working classes can be, encouraged by a southern bourgeois media clearly aroused by a northern bit of rough". It's not a question of music taste. Nor is anyone advocating the idea that bands should sing about post-modernism or harbour intellectual delusions. The fact remains Oasis played thicker-than-they-actually-are, cranked it up and proudly wagged their fingers. It worked. It sold in shed loads" Read the whole thing on: http://www.hagleyroadtoladywood.blogspot.com/ |

Re: OASIS: most overrated band ever?
After their two singles "Wonderwall" and "Champagne Supernova", they were being compared to The Beatles. That insane assumed comparison could only give Oasis flack. It's too bad they blew it so early in their career, I would love to see what they could have flourished into if the Gallagher bros weren't so dysfunctional.
One could only wonder... |

Re: OASIS: most overrated band ever?
I don't think they're particularly highly rated now!
I think they're a decent enough band who do have a few really good songs but they don't seem to be able to manage innovation or development so they couldn't help but become boring fairly quickly. I like 'Live Forever', 'Half The World Away' and 'Slide Away' particularly - so I suppose it's their more bombastic stuff that I have a problem with. (also if Rod Stewart covers 'Cigarettes and Alcohol' you know it can't be particularly edgy) |

You mean the forum for old-timers?
I always preferred Suede to Oasis, just a personal taste thing. Most Americans are too busy watching American Idol to care about interesting music. I often feel like I'm part of a distinct minority. |

And what distinct minority would you be a part of? I'm interested. And I'm sorry you have such a skewed view of Americans' music preferences, being that you are much much older than the rest of us you must have the wisdom to assume these things... |

Re: OASIS: most overrated band ever?
Well, I'm an ethnic minority. Ha... However, that's not what I was referring to: most of the American public don't care about music on independent labels or anything else that is off-the-beaten path of pop culture. Here, it's all about mass consumption, consumerism and targeted marketing, why else would pop divas and manufactured boy bands sell so many records?
Go take a look at the Hot 100 on billboard.com, are you interested in most of those acts? I'm not, and yet the numbers don't lie. Someone has to be buying those records. FYI, if you're looking for some kind of argument or a place to vent some type of anger, you've come to the wrong place. That's one of the nice things that comes with being an old-timer, you mostly don't give a damned, just as long as there's a hot cup of coffee or tea, the beer is cold, the singer doesn't forget the words to the next verse, and the drummer doesn't randomly speed up the tempo when he gets excited, then things are good. Never confuse wisdom with well seasoned, jaded cynicism.

What's the story morning glory was a great song though. Excellent! But I'm not a fan. A few stand out songs but yeah... There was a time they were over-rated and now they ain't really rated as much anymore are they?
