A recommendation: Seigmen
I'd like to introduce to you the norwegian goth metal band Seigmen - one which, I consider to the apex of norwegian music. They are not goth metal in the same fashion such as Nightwish (which is more powermetal than anything, really. But I digress), Evanescence, Cradle of Filth (their later work, that is), Type O Negative or any other goth metal bands you might have in mind.
They are simply enough: unique. Seeing as analogies to other musical elements is bound to fail with the above realization, all I can really do is to point out a few songs for you to give a whirl. Unfortunately, you would be hard-pressed to find these in a record store, you're better off searching them down on the net through such clients as DC++. Alternatively, I'd be more than willing to procure some sample songs from my own collection if you wish. Another note would be that the majority of their work is sung in norwegian - which in some ways is a pity as their lyrics are truly masterpieces in their own right; but sadly, they lose a lot of their luster during translation from norwegian to english, though still worth a glance to get the gist of it all. Some songs, namely the ones off their Radiowaves album is, as the name might imply, in english. Unfortunately, I find this to be their weakest album. Norwegian, however, is a very melodic language, I find, and the style of the vocalist, Alex merges very well with this. Then again, I might be biased seeing as it is my mother tongue, but never mind that. So, without further ado, here is a short list of recommended Seigmen listening (really, do listen to it all in due time, but this is as good a start as any):

Seigmen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
A friend of mine showed me them a few weeks ago. So far I have their cd Metropolis. I have not heard any of their other stuff though, but that will soon change... I have been recommended Total. What do you recommend? I was absolutely addicted to Metropolis when I got it... I am still kind of addicted, but at least I don't listen to it on repeat for hours anymore. |

As I said, I don't know about that label either... or what it is supposed to mean musically.
And you should probably pay more attention to what Hypes has to say, considering the fact that he has a lot more knowledge than me on the subject, anyway. |

If you listen to the older songs, such as Korsfarer it's pretty evident that they're very much metal, though especially songs off the Radiowaves album are very rock-influenced.
Glad you've heard about them, Elizabeth. Hjernen er Alene, and Dråben can be downloaded at http://www.hypeblog.com/seigmen/ |

Draaben was good, Hjernan sounded a bit 80's and in dire need of a wider vision. Someone tell the band to get a more imaginative producer and sing in English, please.

Haha. Hjernen er Alene (The Mind is Alone) is actually a cover of an old DeLillos song (a dance band - the difference is unbelievable). You lose a lot of the depth if you don't pick up on the lyrics, unfortunately.
I'll have some more tracks uploaded later today. And no! They have some english songs, but norwegian is such a superior language. ![]() |

Re: A recommendation: Seigmen
For Hjernen I just kept wanting some Fields of the Nephilim-style background noises to come in and create a sense of wider scenery. Did the dance track have those?
