Why do you listen to Metal?
If you could answer these questions you'd do me a massive favor, it's for my A Level Coursework research:
1. What do you think of Heavy metal/screamo/death metal/etc. (basiclly anything of the heavier persuasion)? 2. Do you listen to metal? 2a. [If yes] why do you enjoy it? 2b. [if no] What are your reasons, beyond not liking it? 3. Do you agree that heavy music makes it's listeners more prone to violent thoughts and/or actions? Why? 4. Do you agree with the idea that anyone who watches violent music videos along with the violent song will become, themselves, more violent to them or others? 5. Do you think that Marilyn Manson's music videos are too violently and sexually explicit? 6. If you pass a person on the street who is heavily tattooed and pierced and is wearing an all black outfit consiting mostly of studs/leather do you feel slightly intmidated? If you could answer these questions it would be a MASSIVE help, really! If you could answer as detailed as possible that would also be great. I need the most honest views you can give. Thanks. |

Re: Why do you listen to Metal?
I listen to metal music because i was braught up on rock music and i loved its intensity compared to all the mainstream shit out there .also i cant stand the trends these days, evry1 thinks that because its on the radio, it must be a gd song, but most that shit aint actualy done by the person who its titled to. but metal and other genres that involve a complete band, u know they have writen and taken the time themselves to make it sound unique. honestly, metal has decreased in popularity , due to ignorance and people who are to afraid to be a litle bit different. When i see someone else walkin down the street with black clothes, or even a band t shirt and a nice spike belt , i think ( yeah dude , represent) i feel part of a trend that is now missunderstood. all my friends apart from my band ( youtube/BlackofNightUK) are chavs lmao, and i enjoy giving them doses of metal, and one by one , slowly I know I'm making an impact , as they do like it very much, though reluctant to admit it. some people think that because we are metalheads and dress different to every1 else taht wer freaks or sumin. but wen they get to know me , and i make sure they do lol theyr very suprised to find me quite like them. wer all the same. listening to heavyer music doesnt make you violent or anything( booze does lol)and if any music makes people violent, its RAP!lol . I enjoy listening to metal beacuse the insane guitar riffs and the many different styles of singing or vocals. I am a singer in my band and i play the guitar . in a way , metal is like one big competition for every band to be better than another, so like sounding different to be heard. so all the guitaring is upped a notch and the technicality keeps geeting beter as it progresses. and as for maralyn manson , he's in a totaly different ball game lol hes just a bit weird. but obviously does it for publicity, but i think he is quite dirty anyway, havin taken a few ribs away to wet his own nob lol
I am not a fan of screamo music thou some of the actual music is ok , but usualy the vocals are shit, u cant understand them they don't take a breath they just scream non stop lol. wen you get into metal and the alternative side of music ull start to understand the reason of screams , and learn there are different types of screams, but only one who has experienced them can truly understand and tell the difference between a metal ( good scream) and screamo ( just flat out screamin ) its passion in a way, and you have to have a good scream coz i have heard some , and they are shait lol. im still developing mine , but i mainly sing and do vocal harmonys. i like to be able to sing along aswel as play an amazing guitar riff. i think im done now lol |

Re: Why do you listen to Metal?
1. Metal is big, not just showbiz wise but physically, emotionally, mentally and thematically.
2. Yes I listen to metal, it's like oxygen for me 2a. Because it speaks to me when everyone else ignores me, because it gives a feeling of companionship, it makes me feel powerful, it gives me strength, it gives me somewhere to belong where I can be myself and no-one persecutes or bullies me on the basis of who I am, it exists outside the considered social norms and it doesn't care, it does everything that religion does for believers, it's the greatest thing ever. 3. I don't automatically agree, I believe there have to be other things, external factors other than music that contributes to violent actions, mosh-pits are (by their very nature) violent but this is just a release for angst, a method of taking all the pent up anger towards the world and letting it out, it has violent themes but this is often as an example or an expression or a metaphor. 4. No, I have loads of violent movies and 21 days of metal if played back to back, I'm not nearly as violent as this theory would suggest. 5. No, not for the points he's making. 6. No, I feel like part of something, there's something we have in common. |

Re: Why do you listen to Metal?
1: i love the heavier side of metal music mostly, i think it is the best music to be listening to when i need to scream along to something.
2:i listen to most kinds of metal music. 2a: i enjoy it because it never fails to make me feel better if i'm having a bad day. to me, heavy screamy metal music is loud, in-your-face poetry. everyone has different music in their collection that they choose to listen to depending on their mood, eg. i listen to Animals by Pink Floyd to relax to, or Mechanical Animals by Marilyn Manson sometimes so i can jump around mental if i'm in a weird mood. it really is therapeutic. or maybe thats just me? each to their own. 3:i don't agree. i think everyone is capable of violence, and that metal music has nothing to answer for in the cases of violence where weak stupid people are too shit scared to take full responsibility for their own actions and instead say "the music made me do it". its absurd. 4:see above. 5:yes, some of them can be. i am a manson fan myself, and i think the life he has had has inspired his musical creativity and his loud, violent alter ego does come out in his videos and on stage, but every real performer shows their artistic side on stage. marilyn manson should not be harshly judged just because he has more balls than most in the music industry. 6:i do not feel at all intimidated by that image. i am attracted to people who let themselves go mental artistically on themselves and don't stick with conformity. i do that myself! i have answered these questions with, as you ask, as much honesty and detail as i could. i hope it helps

Re: Why do you listen to Metal?
For me---metal is a way of life--not to sound overly melodramatic... but it really is. I grew up on the metal of the late 1970s adn 80s--that's my cup of tea--and the bads of that era really had a big impact on me. I feel like a grew up with those bands--they're my "friends" and my "guitar teachers"... I learned to play listening to the bands of that time... great stuff!

Re: Why do you listen to Metal?
Yeah, it's an age old proverb and it's used in everything but metal for me is definately not just music, it is a way of life, you can see that by the way I dress and where I like to hang out, if you look at a lot of people you can tell this, metal is the first thing I think about in the morning (most mornings, sometimes it's breakfast), the speakers only go off late at night just before I go to bed, this is what metasl does, I always have my headphones, my iPod and my metal with me, if I don't it just feels wierd.
