Re: Who are the great rock bands NOW?
Oh I don't know, I thought the Foo Fighters started getting really watered down after the Colour and The Shape. Shame, because that album had some real moments.
I though Kula Shaker was going to be quite the band after being blown away by their second album, but they split after that, sadly. |

Re: Who are the great rock bands NOW?
Yes, but after Everlong I don't remember them really having a hit here in Asia at least. The last song I saw a video of, Learning To Fly, was fun but average, I thought. The Colour and the Shape was a really, really strong album. Any word on what's become of Grohl's metal project with King Diamond, Thom Warrior and so on?

Re: Who are the great rock bands NOW?
First of all, I have to agree with those who listed the Red Hot Chili Peppers. They just keep getting better and better, in my opinion.
And then there's Metallica. I hesitate to jump into the fray here, because other than the actual song "St. Anger", I haven't heard the new stuff. Too broke to buy CD's at the moment. However, I have to say that I would continue to list them as continuing great simply because there is so much more depth there than your basic run of the mill metal band. It's definitely a testosterone-laden depth, but depth nonetheless. I've also got to add U2 to the list. Yeah, I know, they don't do anything that often any more. St. Bono must save the world, you know (and I say that with all affection; I admire him for being willing to at least try). But when they do give us some new music, it always rocks one way or another. Also, they deserve to be named just because they haven't lapsed into complacency so much that they aren't afraid to try new stuff when they do get into the studio. But then again, I'm old. I don't even know half the bands you all have listed. And the ones I do know...I know that Radiohead are supposed to be Great, but I just can't warm up to them. "Creep" was a great song (yeah, go ahead, laugh), but after that I just can't get excited about what they're doing. As for Foo Fighters, from what I've heard of their stuff I would say that they belong on the list, but I just don't know their music aside from what gets played on the radio and on the video channels. And as for the Sex Pistols...I love that image of them as a manufactured band in the great tradition of the Monkees (wow, that reference will really date me...have any of you kids ever even heard of the Monkees - aka the Pre-Fab Four?) I didn't know that about the Pistols, but now that I think of it, if figures.

The Darkness?! You have got to be kidding. They came in concert to my area not too long ago and one of the radio ads for them said " the band that has put the sex back in rock and roll". I nearly had a car accident I was laughing so hard!

I love the Chilli Peppers. Pearl Jam were crap after Ten. To be honest most modern rock music is very poor compared to the sixties and seventies rock. People today have very poor tastes.

I really wish they had never adopted the whole scary mask look because I think a lot of people don't take them as seriously as they should because of it. Believe me, I think that 99% of the bands in their genre stink but imo they are one of the few exceptions. |

I agree with you that a lot of people have bad tastes these days when looking at the Top 40 as proof but the main problem people have nowadays is a short attention span. Rock bands in the 60's, 70's and most of the 80's had generally loyal fan bases that would roll right along with the band through their careers. Sometimes these bands made bad albums but would bounce back with a great one. These days with the Internet, movies, video games, etc. cluttering up peoples goggles few have the attention span to follow a band for very long. I played No Code for a friend of mine one time a few years ago by PJ and he absolutely loved it. He couldn't believe he had never heard of it, but he had dropped them like a bad habit after their chic wore off in 94. I'm not placing you in this category but its just the other side of the coin. A lot of people I hear say what you did about them haven't actually taken the time to listen to them and make thier opinion justified. |

Re: Who are the great rock bands NOW?
I read the title of this post and had every intention of coming on here and posting a one word answer "Tool". I should have know they would have been the first band mentioned, all else falls by the wayside.
As for the Chilli Peppers, I dont really rate anything they have done past the Californication album, By The Way got some awesome reviews so I went out and purchased it on day of release, I have to say I was more than a little disapointed. Oh and knivesout, any street cred you got for mentioning Tool first was lost along the way when you mentioned King Diamond! "Christmas time is here again Santa needs a helping hand We cannot find his evil sheet To draw his laying for the night So all the waiting christmas trees Gonna hear their master sing.... There’s no presents, not this christmas There’s no presents Tom and jerry, drinking sherry They don’t give a damn Christmas time is here again Santa needs a helping hand It’s getting very, very late St.peter’s crossed the golden gate An donald duck is still in bed I wonder who he’s gonna help There’s no presents, not this christmas There’s no presents Tom and jerry, all done sherry They don’t give a damn There’s no presents, not this christmas There’s no presents Tom and jerry, still drinking sherry They don’t give a damn I’m dreaming of a white.... sabbath.." Lyrics To No Presents For Christmas The year before last a friend actually bought me "The Best of King Diamond and Mercyful Fate" as a joke birthday present. We were stuck in a deadend job that drove us around the bend, we adopted the slogan "At least we're not King Diamond" and used to listen to the album in fits of histerics to cheer us up. Any other condenders? Not really, not without venturing into metal anyway. I guess like Marilyn Manson says "Rock Is Dead". |
