Goth music
Went shopping for old tunes the other week - only Floodland and the recent best hits for Sisters of Mercy, and no Nephilim. Story everywhere. I asked in MVC and they said the the sisters are effectively deleted by Warner, and that Nephilim is only available from a small distributor. Eek! Goth music is dead! I thought.
So I went back and checked out Amazon - and now have Vision Thing and The Nephilim. Hooray! ![]() Vision Thing is a bit pants, but there are some very redeeming tracks - Ribbons, Doctor Jeep, and When you don't see me. As for The Nephilim - a truly great work of gothic music - you have superb metal tracks like Moonchild, interspersed with other tracks - such as the epic Last Exit for the Lost - intro'ed with monks chanting, crows cawing, and various other great atmospheric tracks. The Nephilim, for myself, is noe of the most definitive releases of the Gothic music genre and contrasts nicely with other groups, suh as Sisters, who tend to be variably mainstream (This Corrosion is a Goth Anthem, but a lot of the tracks on Floodland are not great tunes - Lucretia being a great exception, of course). Anyway...Gothic music. ![]() And as Steve WRight once said, old Goths never die - they just look that way. ![]()

Re: Goth music
I'm surprised to hear that Warner Bros. has deleted Sisters. But, Andrew Eldritch was never really consistent with the releases what with waiting years in between releases. I saw them on the Floodland and Vision Thing tours and really enjoyed them live. Floodland and First And Last And Always are among the finest Goth Rock albums released in the 80's imo. Vision Thing was a disappointment as was Love And Rockets self titled release that came out around the same time. In fact, both bands toured together for those releases and both were considered commercial sellouts by long time fans.
Fields of the Nephilim were always under the radar but Razor Dawn was a great release by them. I don't really have anything else by them other than some assorted singles. Here's some other favorite Goth acts I like... Cocteau Twins (duh) This Mortal Coil Chris & Cosey Christian Death Dead Can Dance Wolfgang Press Clan of Xymox (first album only) ...among others. I definitely think Goth as a major force in underground music is dead but then again there really isn't much underground music anymore. |

Re: Goth music
Heh, Dead Can Dance s a group I got into big time a while back. Helps to be very depressed at the time, though! "Within the Realm of a Dying Sun" is one of the most melancholic albums I've heard, and even beats Slowdive's "Just for a Day".
![]() This Mortal Coil I actually found a little mainstream - some good tunes but never enough to sustain. And Cocteau Twins' Treasure never made it into my CD collection - though as I was permanently broke the past 10 years, very little has. Soon change that now. ![]() I deifnitely do recommend "The Nephilim" album to you, though - certainly worth a listen or three. ![]()

Re: Goth music
The Sins of The Beloved's first album was really good - that violonist in particular.
I recently got hold of some Dead Can Dance - this really is good stuff! Curses for not discovering it earlier. They have a very nice tribal touch to the Goth feel. |

Re: Goth music
Into the Labyrinth actually seemed a step away from their more moody and gothicy stuff.
I think it was their last work before Lisa Gerard went solo on "The Mirror Pool", and then she moved into the mainstream as a force majeure on the Gladiator soundtrack. Too much Brendan on Into the Labyrinth - nice music, but it's Lisa's voice that always captivates (Yulunga is a great track). A recommendation for Dead Can Dance would be "A Passage In Time", which is bits and bobs across most of their albums - starts with a modern mix of the mediaeval dance piece "Salterello" and that compilation also includes "Cantara", which is possibly one of their best tracks (the studio version, though - not the live version). See if you can find something on peer-to-peer, if you use them. ![]() Within the Realm of a Dying Sun is definitely the most melancholic, though - brilliant, but darn depressing music towards the end.
