The Sensational Alex Harvey Band

There’s a new biography out soon and it’s brought the memories flooding back. The Sensational Alex Harvey Band were fantastic. They had a stage act that was simply bizarre in its day – mixing theatre and rock, with a typical Glaswegian aggression. And the songs…..Sharks Teeth, The Tomahawk Kid, The Tale Of The Giant Stone Eater, Vambo (a cross between Santa Clause and Spiderman).

They had a couple of hits with Delilah and The Boston Tea Party and refused to play TOTP unless they were allowed to play live. Somehow they just never seemed to really hit the mainstream.

As a spotty teenager, I’d never heard anything like this before. Harvey’s vocals like a hacksaw through a drainpipe, wearing his ‘swagman’ T shirt – Zal Cleminson dressed like a murderous guitar playing Marcel Morceau. It was more like Harvey and his Henchmen than a band.

There have been many good bands come out of Scotland in the past few years – and quite a few acknowledge the influence this group had on them.

Sadly, Harvey died at the age of 47 in 1982.

So, if you fancy looking for something a wee bit different. Check them out.

Died on stage, didn't he?

I'm wracking my brains here - I'm sure Nick Cave did a cover of an Alenxander Harvey Band track. Someone point me to a track listing for "Kicking Against the Pricks".

Re: The Sensational Alex Harvey Band

Would it be "The Hammer Song"?

Re: The Sensational Alex Harvey Band

I think he died in belgium just after a gig.

Not sure about the cover version but I think Nick Cave would definitely be well suited to covering a SAHB song (in his own inimmitable way )

Re: The Sensational Alex Harvey Band

How does this sound?

"Oh, please, don't send me out,
Said the man with the hammer, hammering the anvil,
I've been sitting, far too long,
And he keeps on hammering,
Keeps on hammering,
Keeps on hammering...
Hammering the anvil"

Think that's the Hammer Son, anyway.

Some of Cave's cover versions on Kicking Against the Pricks are pretty inspired and completely removed from the originals - his cover of "Hey Joe" is drumming pianos and mournful violas - completely different to Hendrix's guitars.

It's from the album 'Framed' - circa 1972.
