What do you guys think of Aussie music?

From my perspective, we a re a very musically active country, and its not just the youth either (though obviously we make up a big part of the 'activeness'). Bah, I'm having trouble getting to my point here.

Okay, musics big. there's so many festivals around the joint, live music is sooooo big. whether its a festival, street performance, clups and pubs, local bands/ artists or massive international concerts. Inside outside, whatever, we love our music and we like it live.

So, we have a fair few artists around that people havn't heard of, ranging from Pop, to alternative to Jazz, Rythymn and Blues.

I'm very eclectic when it comes to music. I love Silverchair, one of my favourite gigs was a 2003 special performance in NewCastle. I also love this relatively small group that basically just performs at pubs and cafes called Urban Gypsies. Very nice.
My recent obsission at the moment (poly is probably gonna groan at this) is The John Butler Trio and the Cat Empire.

John Butler is a hippy, pure and simple. But he has some very funky tunes, though most people only know him by his recent album, Sunrise over Sea and his 'big hit' Zebra. If anyone is interested in some good music, look him up.

Cat Empire, well, they are hard to explain. This is their website. It has a whole pile of info there, but most importantly, it has downloads and lyrics and stuff. Gotta love these guys. They are a blend of so much: Jazz, Latin, Hip-hop, regae, whatever, you name it, its there somewhere. I'm loving their album at the moment. Very fun and funky.

It is a fricking great show. Shame Heartbreak High was scrapped though. We do have more people and subsequently more TV's than our Southern cousins.

All of The Sleepy Jackson(s?) music sounds the same. It erks me. And whilst the Spazzies are a fine Ramones tribute band, I hope they don't think they can ride that wave forever.

And I will groan at John Butler, but I like the Cat Empire.

John Butler is a dirty hippy (Cartman: XO Goddamn I hate Hippies! They're always on about saving the earth but then they drive around in those beat-up old vans that get crappy milage!) , but you live in the Blue Mountains which explains a lot His music is also irritating to me, especially his vocals.

I like it. It tends to reflect what I liked in American rock music in the '90s. Silverchair and Powderfinger are among my favorites. I also like Killing Heidi, but only their live stuff. I don't know why, but they tend to over-produce their music when recording in the studio.

My favorite Silverchair album, by the way, would have to be Freakshow.

Woohoo! Poly listens to JJJ, I was gonna mention it, then got lazy. Its awesome, a national radio station, with no ads! ya. Sometimes they play twaddle for the sake of being different, but JJJ is the only way to go. I wanna enter the Beat the Drum contest...
