Stone Temple Pilots Poll

Vote for your favorite STP album. I included a few of the side projects as wild cards. I did not include the greatest hits album, Thank You, because....well....because it is a greatest hits album.

I voted for Purple.

I voted for Purple, too. Core was a great debut, dark, compelling but also rather derivative of its times. Tiny Music is totally brilliant, quirky weirdness running helter skelter, but all in all Purple is the best mix of songs and moods, every track on that is good. No. 4 (Vol. 4) was ok - it seemed to pick up too much from the nu metal and heavier modern rock happening when it was released, but there were some great moments. Shangriladida sounded generic and trite. Forget about it. Talk Show was ok - without Weiland's vocals, the DeLeo brothers somehow sound far more pedestrian, but I liked 12-Bar Blues a lot.

The less said about Velvet Revolver, the better.

That is pretty much the same way I look at their catelog of albums. Remember Weiland's band, Magnificant Bastards? It is a shame that he did not do more with it.

It is wierd to look back at both Rolling Stone and Spin magazine reviews for the band. Neither book wished to give them any credit back in the early '90s because they were viewed as pacifying the Pearl Jam fans until their next album came out. I am glad to see that STP got their dues later on.

Re: Stone Temple Pilots Poll

Sorry. I had to vote "never like them". I think it has something to do with the fact that I first heard them after I heard Pearl Jam, and the first thought through my mind was, "Hey, he's trying to sound like the guy in Pearl Jam". While that might be a completely unfair reaction, that was mine, and I never could listen to STP.

Well, a lot of people agreed with you, so you are in good company. With Core, I do feel that they were trying to cash in on Pearl Jam's success, which is probably why I always liked Purple more. It really was an album all about stumbling onto their own voice.

Pearl Jam is still one of my all time favorite bands. I think I made a similiar poll or thread about them awhile ago...
