Which musician do you like better? Considering they take different approaches and attitudes to macabre music writing, I thought it would be interesting which artist people enjoy more.

I voted for Rob Zombie. I love old, campy horror films, and I like that he doesn't expect the listener to take him very seriously, while I feel Marilyn Manson does.

I do like both musicians, however.

My favorite work by Rob Zombie is (counting the White Zombie years) The Sinister Urge, while my favorite Marilyn Manson album is Antichrist Superstar.

My favorite Manson album is Mechanical Animals, but I very much doubt he's ever going to do another synth heavy album like it again.

It depends on my mood, really. When I'm feeling normal, I'd go with Zombie. When I'm ticked off, Manson. And when I'm happy...well, then I listen to 80's pop music and avoid the both of them.

I guess I like them both the same, though, so that's what I'm voting for.

I'm not hugely familiar with the work of either. However, based on the fact that from what I do know of the things they've done, I find Marilyn Manson's work much more interseting than Rob Zombie's work, I had to vote for Manson.

Neither!!!

I liked White Zombie for J's heavy riffing, but Rob on his own seems all style and no real depth, and I've never really felt compelled by Marilyn Manson's shock tactics.

I would like to instead nominate Alice Cooper,or maybe Glenn Danzig, in keeping with the Halloween theme.

I find Rob Zombie way too misogynistic for my tastes. Yes, a lot of his work is a tribute to B-films, but listening to some woman fake an orgasm on track after track is just irritating. The women in his videos tend to be fairly scantily clad with no value other than as a prop.

Manson has mysogynistic lyrics as well, but he's just as willing to exploit himself as he is a female. This was very apperant in the musical interpretation of submissive roles on 'Mechanical Animals' and in the video for "Long Hard Road Out of Hell." He's always had a 'break me' attitude, which I love about him. This tendency seemed a lot more masked on "Golden Age of the Grotesque," but the album is still strong.

One of the most pleasurable things about Manson is his intelligence and his ability to articulate his ideas. It's always a pleasant surprise to come across someone who appears the way he does, yet is famously well-educated and polite when interviewed.

The only thing with Alice is, he's not quite so much fun now that we know he's a golf addict and a good Baptist boy. Nothing wrong with any of that, of course. But that information about him just doesn't fit, if you know what I mean.

Re: Manson. I will agree that he is a lot more intelligent than he may seem - he is in fact a master communicator, manipulating the shock/horror/self-loathing idiom of his music to great success, and going by his autobiography a decent prose writer as well. However, his vision doesn't really speak to anything in me except on a very surface level - a fall-out of his populist appeal?

Oh, now, if we are going to include pre-dating artists, then we should really give a nod to Iggy Pop. I also like the dark edge to the Animals' song, "House of the Rising Sun."

For a very well known pop-song, House of the Rising Sun has incredibly depressing lyrics.

I have no problems with scantily clad women, but if Rob's gonna have 'em in there wearing short-shorts and giant hats, then he needs to strip down too. He always seems so bulky. But I guess I'm really not his target demographic, so pleasing me is very far from his interests.

He should be forced to strip naked after the abysmal "House of 1,000 Corpses." What a train wreck that was. Yes! Forced to strip naked and wash his hair!

Heh, I actually really liked the film. I think many people over look the fact that House of 1,000 Corpses is a homage to cheesy '60s horror flicks. It isn't a film without flaws, but I think it does a fine job at being disturbing while retaining the idolization of its influences.

I am looking forward to Zombie's second film, Devil's Rejects, that is coming out early next year.

Ooooh. I like both of them although Manson can get a bit crazy...I still enjoy his music. My favorite songs of Manson's is Nobody's and Long Hard Road Out Of Hell. And that last one mainly because the Sneaker Pimps sing with him. Of Rob's music my fave song would be Phantom Stranger...the music is just exciting!
