Coldplay
So I gave in to the corporate marketing and bought "Rush of Blood to the Head" in an attempt to expand my music experience.
Seems to be a well-regarded album/group by all accounts, but I have to admit to finding it to be completely bland - a very dull album indeed. Have I simply not given it enough time, or would anyone share this initial perception?

Re: Coldplay
Compared to most radiofare in the states, I think it's a pretty good album. You definitely have to be of a certain mood to really enjoy it, though. I'm rather partial to bands that employ the piano, also, so they get points for that. Have you seen the video for The Scientist? It's excellent.

Re: Coldplay
Here's the thing - when the last album, Parachutes, came out, I really liked the singles I'd heard, and rushed out to get the tape. It sounded good. But by the time the last song played, it sounded exactly like I'd just listened to a dozen-odd iterations of the same song-template. A very similar trip, throughout. I thought the same applied to the new album, too. I think of them as a sort of Radiohead-lite, they've copped the soaring voice and the tinkly piano bits and used them to craft a series of very pretty, often elegant tunes, but they aren't exactly starting revolutions in my head. One of the better bands currently floating around the charts, and I don't dislike them but they'll never be essential.

Re: Coldplay
Been listening to it a lot more and really enjoying it now - the pathos is stronger and I feel I can really hear influences from the indie scene of the 90's - there is almost certainly an influence by House of Love and Slowdive in there . I'm actually really enjoying Coldplay now - my girlfriend converted me, and I just got Parachutes and X&Y from Amazon for her birthday this weekend.

Don't listen to them an awful lot because my mates dictate what goes in my car stereo (I've had a day on campus driving around with Bon Jovi on. Nothing like pulling up to a bunch of good looking girls in a car with 'Shot through the heart!' blaring out ). But they went up considerably in my estimations after their awesome performance at Glastonbury this year. |

Re: Coldplay
Don't like them as much as I used too. Got a bit obsessed with the parachutes album, saw them live at the manchester evening news arena and they were good. Got a rush of blood to the head liked it, but didn't love it, and haven't really listened to it much since then. I do want to get the new album though, but I think I'll be waiting until i see it on sale at some point

Re: Coldplay
Haven't got their new one yet, but A Rush of Blood is a lovely album - great chill-out music. It took ages to grow on me - I initially thought they were a bit dreary and depressing - interesting to see Knivesout mention Radiohead, because I always thought they were sort of boring version of Radiohead. Still, I eventually got the album, and now I think it's great.

Re: Coldplay
To me, Parachutes is one of the best pop albums ever made. But I find Rush of Blood dreadfully boring. The two albums are really very different, and I blame the production. The songs are still good, and the instruments are basically the same. But while Parachutes sounds raw and real, Rush of Blood sounds like radio music. As if that was the goal, to make music for the radio. It's not a bad album, but it sounds very bland compared to how it could've been with a different producer. They seem to have fixed that in X&Y, which sounds much, much better.
One of my greatest memories being asked to sing Trouble with a band at one of those band-aid charity anti-drug type concerts. The band was excellent, and there must've been 600 people there. Man, what an adrenaline kick. When I got to the climax I thought I was gonna explode. |

Re: Coldplay
X&Y is my favourite - has a really nice 80's throwback sound to it. Not really keen on parachutes, as it's starts will pace then the songs seem to drag into slow melodies.
Tend to listen to Coldplay when driving though, so maybe that just means Parachutes isn't great driving music. ![]()
