No Beatles in Space

In another odd fallout of copyright law, aliens cannot listen to The Beatles: http://www.hallucinogenesis.net/blog/?p=3

Actually, I just subscribe to a few handy groups with people who gather stuff like this. But yes, someone somewhere has too much free time.

Re: No Beatles in Space

David Bowie would be taken by Aliens like one of them.
"Ground control to Major Tom..."
The most proper album to be sent to space with next expedition is Pink Floyd's The Dark Side of the Moon but here the problems with copyright are likely to become even tougher that in case of The Beatles.

Re: No Beatles in Space

Here's what we actually did send them: http://voyager.jpl.nasa.gov/spacecraft/music.html

Not a bad mix at all, but relatively heavy on western classical, with two pieces each by Bach and Beethoven.

Re: No Beatles in Space

Hmmm....I wonder if that's one of the songs that Michael Jackson holds the rights to.

Edited to explain that the link in JP's first post refers to a passage in a book by Carl Sagan that says that the people who put the project together wanted to include The Beatles' "Here Comes the Sun" and that all four Beatles agreed to the idea but that the person who holds the actual copyright would not allow it to be included. MJ holds the copyright to a lot of The Beatles' material, but I don't know if he holds all of it.

Interesting... Bach's Brandenburg Concerto is a good choice. I love it. Wonder why they didn't include 1st piano Concerto by Pyotr Chaikovsky.
