Views on MTV
MTV, a channel that once was embraced by the youth generation with fervor, now faces an increasing amount of hostility by the public.
Why do you believe (if you agree with the above statement) people are expressing more and more discontent with MTV? |

Re: Views on MTV
I don't have cable anymore, so I don't see MTV. Not a loss, since I hadn't watched it to any extent for several years. Major exception: I really did enjoy watching "The Osbournes". But I do see MTV 2 on occasion because we get it on broadcast tv here in my area.
Despite my comment that I enjoyed watching "The Osbournes" when they were on, I think MTV started to go wrong when they started doing so many "shows" and stopped showing videos as their main programming. I liked to watch videos. Still do, actually, when they are well produced and imaginative and not just a bunch of scantily-clad women wagging their butts in front of the camera while the members of the band leer at them. Which is another problem with MTV; they'll show those "party" videos, but then they will censor videos that have some sort of exposure of the body or some other controversial aspect, but that also have some sort of serious content to them or are an attempt at serious filmmaking. Just one example is Metallica's video for "Turn The Page".

Re: Views on MTV
It used to be a channel which seemed more dedicated to Indie music now it seems to embrace only black music in all its forms. Poor black music at that - not the good stuff.

Re: Views on MTV
I don't watch MTV anymore. Out here in India, it's saturated with crap Bollywood music and the dregs of international pop. These days, I rely on online zines, mp3 blogs and friends to discover new music.

Re: Views on MTV
It seams to me that most pop and hip hop is image obsessed and that is what the videos are for saying that they have the Girls, cars, money and you must worship them because you do not have these things. MTV started this trend of thinking and is why I hate both MTV and HIP hop because it is image obsessed it’s a very bad view on life and young people believe that it is whets important in life what real life is like.

Re: Views on MTV
Mtv have lost thier audienced because it is a rare event indeed when they actually play music!
![]() When they do play music it is only two genres pop and rap. They have also tried to expand with such sister channels as MTV 2 etc, yet all the channels and music they play on them are aimed at kiddies who have not full developed thier musical tastes yet. Give me VH1 anyday! ![]() |

Re: Views on MTV
Don't watch it much although MTV2 doesn't seem that bad. Usually if I watch a music channel for any duration of time I'll check out Scuzz for a while. Hells Decibels has some great classic metal videos (Territory by Sepultura and Davidian by Machine Head).

Re: Views on MTV
I haven't watched MTV since they first began. They lost me when their VJs became so unreal - at the beginning they were realistic people who liked music and discussing the videos and actually showing the videos. I think I watched the first couple of years and then lost interest...they used to be unique and now they are mainstream.

Re: Views on MTV
I find that today most music videos just allow an artist with little talent become famous. They dont have to put any thought into the music, just put a bunch of good looking people with little clothing and people will watch it. Also most videos are so unimaginative that they really aren't interesting at all. I think that there are more people now that realise this and would rather listen to people with talent then who just look good. There are many good band out there, you just never see them on tv because they dont have to the "right look."

Re: Views on MTV
Which MTV ?
MTV UK or France has nothing to do in terms of music than MTV US. And here you have regular MTV (with lots of crap reality show : dismissed, made, and my personal hatred : Jackass), MTV 2 (that where Indie music is, Lace) and MTV Black (with rap and r'n'b which I can't judge as I don't know this genre but not all commercial type from what I've heard about friends interested in). Personnaly I use MTV 2 as background when I've got dinner home with friends. |
