Re: Greatest Guitarist

There are hundreds of fantastic guitar players out there but only two have truly blown me away.

1) Django Reinhardt. Just listen to this guy play and then remember that he lost two of his fingers in a fire.

2) Joe Pass. I saw him once many years ago. He walked on stage all by his lonesome Plugged into a small amp and proceed to enthrall the whole audience with his big semi-acoustic. No band, no lights, no effects, just dear old Joe and his geetar.

Re: Greatest Guitarist

No votes for John Petrucci? Joe Satriani? Criss Oliva was pretty outstanding as well.

Re: Greatest Guitarist

Well, I don't know about best ever, but the best I've ever seen perform live is Prince. Carlos Santana is very good live, as well. And I don't know about "great", but the Edge does some very interesting, different things with a guitar that I like very much, recorded as well as onstage.

Of course, most of those mentioned (the ones I'm familiar with, at least) certainly deserve mention. I'd also like to mention Gary Moore.

Re: Greatest Guitarist

Angus Young

Mark Knopfler - who sat on the edge of the stage and just played his guitar as the rest of Dire Straits took their own instruments off stage. A brilliant ending to a brilliant concert.

Re: Greatest Guitarist

It depends on the type of music. For jazz I like Al DiMeola (listen to Tour de Force) and Steve Tibbetts (listen to Yr). But the best acoustic guitar work I've ever heard was by Mahavishnu John McLaughlin. Check out Lady L on the Shakti album. His fingers must have been bleeding by the end of the song. I'm also kind of partial to Mike Oldfield's guitar work.

Re: Greatest Guitarist

Kurt Cobain wasn't too bad...

Also Jon Bon Jovi (as I recall)...

Damn, I forgot about Mike Oldfield...

And there is John Williams (the Aussie guitar player)

Re: Greatest Guitarist

Hendrix was the greatest without question but there are many different guitar styles to consider. Jimmy Page was awesome too. I think my favourite guitarist of all time would be Neil Young though I am not sure he would feature on anybodys greatest list.

Re: Greatest Guitarist

Julian Swales from Kitchens of Distinction (and their alterego Toilets of Destruction). Um, Johnny Marr is pretty cool. Oh and Ira Kaplan of course. I guess I'll also say David Gilmour. Ed O'brien and Jonny Greenwood are good in my book as well.

Technically these guys might not be the best, but they make good sounds.

oh i guess i cant for get jimmy.

Re: Greatest Guitarist

The problem here is that there is no such thing as a greatest Guitarist a lot of people are saying Hendrix’s, Hendrix’s is A very good guitarist but he use's to much hammer ons ands string bending in my opinion, Brain may on the other hand all the notes are crystal clear so I prefer Brain may but to be honest with you it is a lot harder to play acoustic than electric and most of the time sounds better this is only my opinion and a lot of people will disagree with me, do not get me wrong Hendrixs is great guitarist just not the greatest I can not say who is the greatest guitarist because I do not know and there are a lot of guitarists I have not listened to

Re: Greatest Guitarist

Jimi Hendrix wrote Voodoo Chile (slight return) and as such wins.

Why did Jimi Hendrix die so young? Because God wanted to learn how to play the guiter properly!

Due to the fact there are many different styles of guitar playing there is no such thing as playing the guitar properly
