Lou Reed is one of the hippest and hardest New York thangs out there who sings with a genuine social conscience. He's been playing in bands for many many years. One of his very famous early songs was "Take A Walk On The Wild Side", you might have heard of it..

Knivesout is correct (despite the Brain surgery) and YES that's one of my fav albums full stop. I still have a cassette of it I play on my Sony Walkman when cruising the city's side walks....
