Gigs Down Under

[quote]Stevie Nicks is set to return to Perth, two years after her triumphant visit with 70s super-group Fleetwood Mac.

Her double-header with tireless Aussie singer John Farnham on February 29th will climax another red-hot summer of concerts. Her national tour, which also includes Farnham in Brisbane and New Zealand.

Both have enjoyed successful concerts of late, Farnham with Tom Jones and Stevie Nicks with Eagle Don Henley.

Other rock’n’roll veterans due in town include Joe Cocker and John Fogerty, of Creedence Clearwater Revival fame.

Rock giants will join forces for big gigs in December. The chart-topping Foo Fighters and Oasis team up for the eighth instalment of the locally produced Rock-It Festival. The following month brings us hard-rockers Motley Crue and Motorhead who join rowdy Aussie acts.

The biggests festival is Big Day Out, held in February. This gig also includes White Stripes plus punk legends Iggy and the Stooges.

Fairmont Village in Western Australia next month for the Butterfly Effect, Cog and Gyroscope or catch the Living End as well as Spiderbait.

Other gigs to watch out for are The Bangles, Alex Lloyd, The Cat Empire and the Hoodoo Gurus.[quote]

A busy few month for some music fans.

I dont live in a very big city so we dont get much. Sarah McLachlan came a while ago, that was pretty cool, she played at the Relay for a Friend event for free. She is extremly talented.

I have heard her name mentioned but don't recall hearing any of her music down here.

What kind of songs does she sing?

Re: Gigs Down Under

I live about two blocks from the major concert venue in my area. This month, we've had Green Day, Motley Crue, System of a Down, and Brooks and Dunn. The Eagles were here not long ago, as well. And some other that I can't recall. The Rolling Stones are scheduled for November 20, and Keith Urban (*swoon* ) and Andrea Bocelli are up in December.

Do I get to go to any of these shows? Oh, heck, no. So, I just sit here and watch the traffic go by on their way to the concerts and try not to be too jealous. It's been so long since I've been to a live show.

Rolling Stones!!! That would be awesome! We tried to get U2 tickets since they were playing close (about a 4 hour drive) but the tickets sold out in 2 minutes or something. I was kind of dissapointed.

Re: Gigs Down Under

I wish U2 would come here. I saw them on the Zoo TV tour a few years back, but had to go to Oakland to do it, and got a horrible cold and cough that lasted for months for my trouble. Of course it was worth every second of it.

I was actually surprised that we got tickets for that show, as it was supposedly sold out, but the friend I went with decided he would call anyway, just to check and managed to come up with tickets for us. It was a great show.

I'd really like to go see the Stones, but its sold out except for some very expensive VIP seats, and I couldn't even afford the regular ticket prices. Oh, well. More of my income than I can really afford is going to a trip to Los Angeles at the end of November to go to LosCon, if my mother is feeling well enough to go. And, in the long run that's better than most rock shows, since it lasts a whole weekend and I get a chance to meet and have conversations with the writers.

Re: Gigs Down Under

Would be great to get to a U2 concert...I live in hope! Not sure about the Stones though, don't think they will sound as good as I remember them.

I am always afraid that I will be dissappointed if they don't sound the same as they used to.

Aw, I mostly want to see the Stones because they're getting old and are going to have to give it up one of these days. I mean, I like a lot of their music, but I wasn't ever that huge a fan. Although I do recommend the film "Gimme Shelter" as a classic rock'n'roll documentary. It is an amazing testament to the fact that a band up on stage really doesn't always know what is really going on down in the audience. And isn't really in as much control of the audience as they sometimes seem to think they are. Appropriate for a band who sings about "playing with fire".

Re: Gigs Down Under

Do they really still play "playing with fire"?

No, from the stage of a festival the audience is pretty amorphous- there's a general "feel" which comes up, telling you how happy/otherwise they are, but it takes effort to see an individual ligger um, excuse me, respected member of the ticket buying public"

Still, remembering the Stones staggering into the studio four hours late, containing enough alcohol and other conciousness modifying substances to be incoherent, one could suspect they weren't always all that sensitive to their audience anyway.

No idea, although it makes a funny, slightly ludicrous mental picture to think of Jagger singing that now. Then again, I've found Jagger to be a slightly ludicrous figure for some years now. Guess I just never understood that particular attraction. A few years back, when I was in school, my social psych instructor came back from seeing a Stones show and was just gushing about Jagger and how sexy he was on the stage and how she had just wanted to throw herself at his feet. I just sat there and listened to her and thought, "Eewwwww".

Still, the music is good, and that's all that really matters, I suppose.

They've been playing the same music for the last fourty years, so it's no surprise they're pretty good at it.

What's more when they started (before I was in the business, if you can believe that) they had to be able to play- no possibility of corrections or overdubs, in, record it and out.
