And it's dreadfulness is recent.

There used to be excellent music around if you felt a little mopey. Like Morrisey, for example. Mind you, in those days a mopey song was 'this is what happened, and happens, and that is why I am a bit upset.'

And now these bands have created the new strain 'I'm inherently whingey and I think everyone's against me.'

I blame Del Amitri. They started it all, with 'Nothing ever happens. Nothing happens at all...'
Well what the **** are you singing about then! Shut up!
Oasis pioneered whiny rock I think. But don't forget about Travis.

--Maybe it's because you live in firggin Scotland, geniuses!

FUnny that most whinge pop is actually from the UK. You don't get in Greece, Jamaica, Hawaii, or other sunny happy places.

But there is American winge-pop. Cannot deny the American winge-pop. For instance, and this is a real line from a band called Greenwheel *while cying with laughter*:
'It's alright. It's alright. It only hurts when I breathe.'

Yup, yawn fest for me.. I can recognise that they are talented in what they do, yet their songs are all similar to my ears, and I do literally feel like napping while listening to them. Bring on some heavy drums already! ;P

Re: Coldplay a little survey

Hype is a killer, full stop - so best to completely ignore it.

Luckily, I'm something of a cultural recluse, so I have almost no idea about what's going on in popular culture, so I miss all that.

I bought Rush of Blood to the head while trying to find new music to listen to, and hated it at first - but now we have the first 3 albums and really like them - we play them in the car whenever we go on a long drive around Scotland.

Nothing really lives up to hype - so I'm glad I don't have that context to fight against.

A couple more older threads on Coldplay here as well, in case anyone's interested:

Re: Coldplay a little survey

Well I enjoy Coldplay... most of their tracks anyway! It really makes a neat change to the music I usually listen to...

I certainly wouldn't buy one of their albums if it was all rubbish, the same as any other band!

Re: Coldplay a little survey

I would have swore i replied to this thread... anyhoo!

I think coldplay are ok, I haven't picked up the new albums, but I do have parachutes, which is a cracking album, and the other album (omg, forgotten what its called!). The fact that it was one of the only albums I could play at work where everything actually didn't mind too much was good as well. So they have mass appeal. (even though we did all agree that too much coldplay made us want to slit our wrists).

Saying that though, I saw them live in 2002, and it wasn't the best gig I've been too. They have no stage presence. And Chris' voice grates on you so much more live

Re: Coldplay a little survey

here's a fun game

Take one coldplays songs lyrics ( anyone)

And any other coldplay songs music ( again any song at all)

mix them together and you make the next coldplay single

Re: Coldplay a little survey

I like Coldplay, although they are admittedly a bit samey. They only really have a couple of basic song ideas, but they do them well. I do prefer the tracks which are more guitar-based (such as "Shiver" or "Yellow") rather than those based on Chris Martin playing the piano (such as "Trouble" or "The Scientist").
